A 17-year-old Baltimore boy was sentenced yesterday to 30 years in prison, with all but 12 years suspended, in the shooting of a man with whom he was involved in a continuing fight. About 9:30 p.m. Nov. 9, Officer Gregory Fisher saw Darius Bacote of the 500 block of Orchard St. fire a handgun five times in the 1300 block of W. North Ave. Fisher chased Bacote, caught him and found a .38-caliber handgun, prosecutors said. Fisher couldn't identify Bacote's target. Police canvassed area hospitals and learned that a man with a gunshot wound to his back had walked in for treatment.

Some famous musicians were playing slightly different tunes in B-more last weekend. Let's start with Darius Rucker. You may know him better as the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish. Darius and his new band put on a benefit concert at the Lyric Opera House, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Carson Scholars Fund. The music was certainly a flash from the past, but not from Darius' own history. Instead of performing the hits that made him famous, he and his band took on Sinatra. And, from what we hear, they did "Ol' Blue Eyes" proud.

With much pomp and circumstance, they held a commencement yesterday at Gateway School in Northwest Baltimore. And for only three graduates. The pomp: robes and mortarboards, processions and recessions, songs and honors for the graduates, camera-toting parents, balloons, more than a few tears of joy. The circumstance: One graduate, Darius Roberts, 10, was honored for having learned to control his emotions and to read a few words. Kevin Thomas, 11, was praised for overcoming the turmoil of a rare disorder that causes him to eat compulsively.

Ordinarily, the programs in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's annual Summer MusicFest are imaginatively put together by artistic director Mario Venzago with a particular theme in mind; each piece complements the overall idea. During Wednesday's penultimate offering in this year's fest, I was reminded of his amusing comment on opening night a few weeks back about how he didn't always remember what the theme was by the time the concert came along. Maybe he really wasn't kidding. I couldn't readily detect any connections between the works this time, but, hey, who needs a theme, anyway?

An 11-month-old baby has died of a heroin overdose, and his mother has been charged with second-degree murder - the second death this year in Baltimore of a baby who ingested the narcotic. Darius Key was found not breathing Sept. 8 at his home in the 200 block of S. Gilmor St. This week, the state medical examiner ruled his death a homicide by "narcotic intoxication," Baltimore police said. Yesterday morning, police charged the boy's mother, Georgianna Key, 23, in the death. In June, a 9-month-old boy died of a heroin overdose in West Baltimore and detectives charged his great-aunt and her boyfriend with second-degree murder after the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
