Two-part concert opens Saturday Carroll County Independent Rock has joined with Carroll County Extreme Music Corp. to present a two-part rock concert of local bands Saturday at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster. Extreme Music will host five bands from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., including Darkness Foretold, Abomination Desolation, Epic Harvest, A Ghost in the A.M. and Burn Your Wings. Independent Rock's lineup from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. will feature Lauren D'Aria, the Niki Barr Band, Fourth Element and Woodbine Hotline.

MIAMI -- Barbara Meller Jensen brought her family from Berlin for two "pleasant" weeks on Miami's beaches. She died a violent death instead because, her husband said, nobody warned her about a street crime that's increasing in Miami: the fender-bender robbery.The bumper-hitting technique, used by thugs to stop their victims, is familiar to many urban Americans. To Mrs. Jensen -- a lost foreign tourist driving an identifiable rental car -- it was a surprise."They just gave her a map -- nothing about the streets she should avoid, and nothing about the bumping of cars or how not to get out of the car," said Christian Jensen, Barbara's husband.

WILLARD L. M-bM-^@M-BuBILLM-bM-^@M-Au McBROOM, age 79, of Elkton, MD passed away on Dec. 2, 2006. Son of the late Vola (Bryant) McBroom and Alfred H. McBroom, he was born May 20, 1927 in Bloomington Springs, TN. He attended Lake View High School in Lake Shore, MI. He began working for the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, MI in 1949, and later moved with his family to Elkton, MD after transferring to the Newark plant. He retired in 1982 and continued as an active UAW member. He served for several terms as the Sergeant at Arms for Local #1183 Retirees.

Carroll Community College has announced the winners of the seventh annual Student Writing Contest, held in conjunction with yesterday's Random House Book Fair, for grades 1 through 12. Students were invited to submit previously unpublished short stories and poems. First-, second- and third-place awards were available in each category for each grade level. Teachers from the Carroll County public school system judged the entries. All winning entries were published in the seventh edition of Writers Today ... Authors Tomorrow, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Carroll County.

Students at Dulaney Valley Senior High School today were mourning the loss of a fellow student who was killed last night after being hit by a car while attempting to cross Interstate 83 near Timonium.The youth, Phillip Edward Cross, 14, of the first block Daria Court in Mays Chapel Village, died of massive injuries after he was struck by at least three vehicles just before 8 p.m.The accident occurred about a half-mile from the youth's home, said State Police Trooper George B. Harrison of the Golden Ring barracks.

The 66th annual McCormick Unsung Heroes Awards Banquet will be held tonight at Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn. Two of the 119 nominees will be honored as the 2006 Unsung Heroes scholarship winners. Philip E. CrossDulaney High studentPhilip E. Cross, a ninth-grader at Dulaney Senior High School, was killed Monday evening when he was hit by cars while crossing Interstate 83 near his home.The 14-year-old, who was born in Towson and lived on Daria Court in the Mays Chapel Village area of Timonium, was a graduate of Padonia Elementary School and Ridgely Middle School. He was a volunteer counselor at Camp Honeybee, a camp for children with cerebral palsy, and tutored elementary school children.

Ronald E. Garrison, associate vice president for fiscal planning and services at Towson University, was killed in an automobile accident March 12 in York County, Pa. He was 61 and lived in Glen Rock, Pa. Mr. Garrison, who died at the scene, was driving a 1991 Acura that was hit head-on by a 1996 Buick Roadmaster driven by Christopher DeVier. Mr. DeVier remains in fair condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Mr. Garrison was born in Baltimore and raised on Gay Street. He was a 1961 graduate of Patterson High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1965 from Loyola College.
