Col. Richard W. Herklotz, a World War II veteran with more than 40 years of military service, died Monday after suffering a heart attack at the 29th Division Association convention in Hampton, Va. He was 80. Col. Herklotz was a former executive director of the association. He served in the 29th Infantry Division, 110th Field Artillery, participating in the invasion of Normandy, as well as five campaigns in Europe. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and other medals. When he returned to the United States, Col. Herklotz was a full-time technician with the Maryland National Guard until he retired in 1982.

Kara Marian Cook, an accomplished horsewoman and artist who was studying to become a hair stylist, died April 12 of injuries sustained in a Baltimore County automobile accident. The Reisterstown resident was 21. On April 12, Ms. Cook was driving north on Greenspring Avenue at 5:31 p.m., when her 2000 BMW struck a 2006 Mercedes-Benz that was stopped and making a left turn on Garrison Forest Road. Her car then collided with a guard rail. Ms. Cook was transported to Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Police Department.

Baltimore County police were investigating yesterday the shooting of two people Saturday night at an Owings Mills apartment complex. About 11 p.m., someone fired a handgun through a set of sliding glass doors into a unit at Watermill Apartments in the first block of Enchanted Hills Road, police said. Victor E. Pope, 45, who was sitting in the living room about 15 feet from the glass doors, was hit in the leg and chest. Daria R. Ellis, 29, was shot in the leg, police said. Ellis was in a room adjacent to the living room.

A Mass of Christian burial for Dario F. Francioli, a retired furniture store executive, will be offered at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Pompei Roman Catholic Church, at Conkling Street and Claremont Avenue.Mr. Francioli, a resident of Northeast Baltimore, died Thursday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center after a long illness. He was 69.A native of Monessen, Pa., he was reared in East Baltimore and attended Our Lady of Pompei School and Patterson High School.Mr. Francioli served with the U.S. Marines during World War II and saw action in the Pacific.
