NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- For the Baltimore Spirit, the United States Youth Soccer Region I championships have become a numbers game. It's not how many goals the team can score -- it managed five in two games yesterday. It's whether the Spirit can find 11 players to put on the field.Dan Hicks converted Matt Nesbitt's cross in injury time as the Spirit salvaged a 2-2 with Northern Virginia's Braddock Road Falcons in a under-20 match yesterday afternoon at Fort Niagara Park. Earlier, Shane Dougherty scored twice and Mike Barger added one as the Spirit defeated the Boston Volcanos, 3-0.The Spirit brought only 10 field players and two goalkeepers after three players canceled at the last minute because of injury or scheduling conflicts.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Sgt. Joseph M. Darby, the young Army reservist who has been hailed and condemned for blowing the whistle about detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, testified yesterday that he deliberated for more than a month about whether to go to Army investigators but finally decided it was a "moral call." Testifying for the first time publicly about the international scandal that his initially anonymous tip touched off, Darby said he was stunned when he discovered the now-notorious photos showing hooded and naked detainees piled in a pyramid and forced to simulate sex acts as grinning U.S. soldiers stood by. "It violated everything that I personally believed in and everything that I had been taught about the rules of war," Darby, 24, testified by telephone at a pretrial hearing for Pfc. Lynndie R. England, one of seven of Darby's fellow soldiers from the Western Maryland-based 372nd Military Police Company who has been charged in the scandal.

Remember all the advice your mother gave you about getting along with others? That no good ever comes from gossip, and how, if you couldn't say something nice about a person, it was better to say nothing at all?Well, Mom may have known manners, but she didn't know beans about marketing.Just ask Kerin Morataya and Darby Romeo. So far, the two have made a second career out of saying not-very-nice things about Shannen Doherty, the bad-publicity-prone actress who plays Brenda Walsh on the Fox series "Beverly Hills, 90210."
