IN THE Flite Three Studios out on Cold Spring Lane, Tim Reid and Daphne Maxwell Reid talked to Cathy Rigby yesterday, taping the interview for a show that's essentially doing the same thing as Rigby's production of "Peter Pan" -- taking it on the road hoping for a shot at the big time.Rigby now knows that after 11 months of playing places like Baltimore's Mechanic Theatre, "Peter Pan" is going to Broadway. But the Reids won't know until sometime next year if "Tim and Daphne" will make television's equivalent -- national syndication.

Chest heaving and voice thundering, Daphne Reid, 11, faced Dani Bryant, 11, and skewered her for stealing her man. Thief of love. Canker-blossom. Painted maypole. Her voice rose with each word volley. Suddenly, she paused, mid-diatribe. Another voice quietly supplied, "I am not yet so low ... " Taking her cue, Daphne went on, "I am not yet so low but that my nails can reach unto thine eyes." Then she lunged across the wooden outdoor stage, her long purple dress no impediment to her rage.

The best that Hollywood could do for women who don't care about football or hot wings is, apparently, Because I Said So, a movie for mothers who want to show their daughters how much worse things could be. I went to this movie so I could feel better about myself, and it worked. I am not only a better mother than Diane Keaton - not nearly so over-involved and controlling despite the protestations of my children to the contrary. I am also a better actress. In this movie, Keaton reprises the character she played in Something's Gotta Give and amps her up until you can no longer bear to watch.
