Early in spring training, pitching coach Rick Kranitz said he had a "sleeper" for the rotation. I'm pretty sure the guy he had in mind was Danys Baez, but I bet if you forced him to make a prediction right now, it would be Brian Bass. ( For more, go to baltimoresun.com/ schmuckblog)

The Phillies suffered the 10,000th loss in franchise history Sunday, which never would have happened if they had "Philadelphia" on their road jerseys. The Orioles seem convinced that Danys Baez will be fine now that he's pain-free. He retired all four batters he faced Sunday after throwing a scoreless inning Thursday in his first appearance since coming off the disabled list. "I thought he threw the ball good. He showed a good curveball," catcher Paul Bako said after Sunday's game. "Danys went through a tough stretch, but we all stood by him. He didn't say anything.

So, who makes your list of Orioles relievers for 2007? Chris Ray. Jamie Walker. Danys Baez. Another new guy. John Parrish. Kurt Birkins. Hayden Penn. If they go with these seven, I'm omitting Rodrigo Lopez, who remains one of the Orioles' most marketable players despite those 18 losses, Aaron Rakers, James Hoey, Sendy Rleal and Todd Williams. I think Hoey needs more time in the minors - perhaps Triple-A Norfolk - before returning to the Orioles. He gave us a sneak peek. Now let his education resume at a lower level.

Free agent reliever Danys Baez and the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized a two-year, $5.25 million contract. A 32-year-old right-hander, Baez was 4-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 59 games with the Orioles last year, holding batters to a .222 average. He has 114 saves in seven major league seasons. He missed 2008 after elbow ligament replacement surgery. Baez could be used as a setup man along with Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero , and he's a potential option as a closer if Brad Lidge struggles again.

It all happened so fast. In a span of three pitches by Jeremy Guthrie in the seventh inning last night, the Orioles' seemingly comfortable four-run lead was whittled to an extremely uncomfortable one-run advantage. And for anybody who has watched the Orioles bumble through the late innings on this homestand, it was easy to predict what would happen next. The Minnesota Twins scored twice in the eighth inning, both on sacrifice flies, and Torii Hunter hit a two-run shot off Danys Baez in the ninth, dealing the slumping Orioles another deflating loss, 7-4, in front of an announced 29,742 at Camden Yards.
