Cox, Heather A. Nale and Ryan W. Dante; loving great-grandmother of Jesilynn Cox, Coralee Cox and Samantha Nale; sister of Mary E. Woods. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the family owned Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Road (beltway exit 26A), on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M., where services will be held on Wednesday at 11 A.M. GREENBELT -- A spidery robot named Dante began inching its way down into an Antarctic volcano yesterday in a daring New Year's display of technology delayed earlier by cold weather and an unexpected eruption.But a computer glitch at the project's base camp brought Dante to a halt after the vehicle had traveled only about 21 feet. The setback dampened the initial excitement over the descent."Everybody watching it here is real excited," said Randee Exler, a spokeswoman at the Goddard Space Flight Center where scientists gathered to watch TV pictures transmitted by the robot.

Joan M. Knoch, a retired Walters Art Museum employee who had been a Johns Hopkins University researcher, died of Parkinson's disease Sunday at Keswick Multi-Care Center. She was 77. She was born and raised in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from high school there in 1947. In 1951, she earned a bachelor's degree in English from Goucher College, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. During the 1960s and 1970s, she was a research and editorial assistant to Charles S. Singleton, who was chairman of the romance languages department at the Johns Hopkins University and one of the world's leading authorities on Dante.

Eight-year-old Dante Mayo exudes energy when he talks about his favorite pastime. While many children his age love baseball and video games, Dante fancies reading.As of yesterday, Dante had read 457 books -- some as long as 200 pages -- since September. Although mysteries are his favorite, the George Washington Elementary third-grader said he will read nearly anything."I like reading too much," said the small boy with big brown eyes and a serious demeanor.Dante, the youngest in a family of eight children, said, "Books are like a magnet, they are stuck to my head."

On Thursday, 18-year-old Dante Swain passed the math test that qualified him to earn a long-sought high school equivalency diploma. Friday night, after a call to his mother in East Baltimore, Mr. Swain headed home for the weekend, boarding a commuter train that would crash in Silver Spring."

Lino Brocka, the Filipino filmmaker and human rights activist, was killed yesterday when the car in which he was riding hit a utility pole in Manila. He was 52. Jailed briefly by the late deposed Philippines President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Mr. Brocka was named by President Corazon Aquino to a 45-member commission charged with drafting a new constitution for her revolutionary government. Despite that association, Mr. Brocka made internationally popular films -- more than 50 films over two decades -- citing social ills that continued to exist after Ms. Aquino came to power in 1986.

Lawrence Andrew Farago, a former advertising executive and owner of Dante's Italian Frozen Foods in Dundalk, died of cancer Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility in Baltimore. The Carney resident was 71. Mr. Farago was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and raised in Cambridge, Mass. After graduating from West Roxbury Memorial Trade School, he served in the Army during the Korean War. During the 1950s, he owned and operated Cambridge Printing Co. before moving to Baltimore in 1960.

The Blast turned to two local players yesterday in its desire to add depth for the final 10 games of the season. Team officials confirmed that forward Dante Washington and defender Mike Lookingland signed, and the Blast will use them to replace forward Denison Cabral and defender Ibrahim Kante, both out for the season with knee injuries.
