ASHBURN, Va. - When the Washington Redskins take the field in their final preseason game tonight, wide receiver Patrick Woodcock is well aware of the task ahead of him. The second-year receiver is one of seven wide-outs on a Redskins roster that seems set with six - Laveranues Coles, Rod Gardner, Taylor Jacobs, Cliff Russell, Patrick Johnson and Darnerien McCants (Arundel). Woodcock's play tonight (8 o'clock, chs. 4, 24) against the Jaguars in Jacksonville could determine whether the Washington coaches decide to keep six or seven wide receivers.

ASHBURN, Va. - The Tennessee Titans may just be the tonic that the Washington Redskins need. Seeking to end a two-game losing streak, the Redskins encounter a Tennessee team that is mired in a three-game skid of its own and also spinning its wheels in the mud. "I think we're catching them at as good a time as any for us," said newly crowned No. 2 wide receiver Kevin Lockett. "Neither one of us has won in the last two or three weeks. Somebody's got to win. The way we see it, it might as well be us."

ASHBURN, Va. -- Steve Spurrier has never been one to follow conventional wisdom. Perhaps that's why the unorthodox coach -- going against the football experts and statistics -- has opted to turn over the Washington Redskins' ever-dwindling playoff chances to quarterback Danny Wuerffel. Wuerffel, a six-year journeyman who has thrown just nine touchdowns against 18 interceptions in 22 career games, will attempt to lead Washington (4-6) out of its third two-game losing streak of the season at 1 p.m. today against the visiting St. Louis Rams (5-5)

NEW ORLEANS -- Coach and player both have won Heisman Trophies. Coach and player are both the sons of preachers. After that, however, flamboyant Steve Spurrier and unflappable Danny Wuerffel operate on opposite sides of the street. For nearly a month, Florida's "Coach Superior" has been on Florida State's case, complaining to the Southeastern Conference and anyone who will listen about the way the Seminoles roughed up Wuerffel in their regular-season showdown. The quarterback, meanwhile, doesn't come off as quite so righteous.

Two, four, six.Eight?Maryland continued its steady improvement this season, but it wasn't enough to get the Terps into their first bowl game in five years. Coach Mark Duffner's teams have progressed from 2-9 to 4-7 to 6-5, but low-profile Maryland learned it will have to do more than just post a winning season if it wants to go to a bowl.If a North Carolina State conversion pass had been completed at game's end against North Carolina, the Terps, and not the Tar Heels, would be representing the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Carquest Bowl.
