CHICAGO -- Marshmallows and cream puffs seem a million years ago. It's fists and forearms now.The Eastern Conference finals have degenerated into a battle no one expected between two teams better known for their basketball than for their imitation of the World Wrestling Federation.Yet here we are, and if the Cavaliers can come back from the 3-2 deficit they face as a result of last night's 112-89 drubbing in Chicago Stadium something beautiful can come from something ugly. And that's what it was -- ugly.

LANDOVER -- First there was Cleveland Cavaliers center Brad Daugherty walking off the court at the end of the first quarter, gone for the evening with a sprained lower back. Then there was forward Larry Nance leaving the court at halftime, gone for the evening with a strained arch in his left foot.A chance for the Washington Bullets to steal a game and end a three-game losing streak? Hardly, on a night where the Bullets' offense also was missing, gone for nearly the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter when Washington failed to make a field goal.

LANDOVER -- The 1991-92 Cleveland Cavaliers boast what former Baltimore manager Earl Weaver called "deep depth" when his Orioles ruled the American League.Challenged by one of the season's best efforts from the struggling Washington Bullets last night, Cavaliers coach Lenny Wilkens called on his talented reserves, and they proved the difference in a 111-102 victory before 8,935 at the Capital Centre.Led by sixth man John Williams' 25 points, the Cleveland subs combined for 54 points. They were particularly effective in the fourth quarter when the Cavaliers, trailing 84-80, scored 11 straight points and never looked back.

DETROIT -- Was it just two seasons ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers had a 57-victory season and appeared to be ready to join the NBA's elite? By now, the Cavs -- rather than the Chicago Bulls -- were supposed to be Detroit's primary challenger in the Eastern Conference. But the Cavs are in transition. One wonders how good they would be with a trimmer Brad Daugherty at center and a healthy Ron Harper at shooting guard. But general manager Wayne Embry placed the Cavs on this road to uncertainty when he traded Harper and two first-round draft choices to the Los Angeles Clippers for the rights to Danny Ferry.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - When the end of his career comes, Danny Ferry isn't expecting any kind of extravagant remembrance of his time in the NBA. Ferry, a San Antonio Spurs reserve, isn't even sure when his career - 12 years and counting - is going to end, but if this is his only trip to the Finals, he plans to savor every moment. "I don't know that there needs to be a big announcement," Ferry said jokingly before a recent practice. "There won't be a farewell tour. I'm going to enjoy this.
