Recent history hadn't favored Baltimore's No. 1-ranked teams against the Washington area, and top-ranked Gilman's coaching staff made that known to its players before yesterday's 44-0 shutout win at St. John's from the District of Columbia.Count them. Heavyweight Mike Faust scored a technical fall over Jameel Day to clinch 13th-ranked Gilman's 29-28 upset of sixth-ranked MIAA A Conference rival McDonogh before 500 fans last night at McDonogh. Down, 28-24, Gilman's Damien Davis (189) pinned Steve Clare with 14 seconds left to set up Faust. Also pinning for Gilman, which won its 13th straight against McDonogh (6-1, 0-0), were Jared Bentz (119) and J. D. Nelson (135). Franco Gould (145) and Tim Webb (152) won decisions. The match was tied at 18 when McDonogh's Andy Seal (160)

Sophomore attackman Ryan Boyle, the quarterback of a Princeton team that won an eighth straight league championship and earned a first-round bye in the NCAA lacrosse tournament, was named the Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, after scoring 17 goals and handing out 27 assists. Boyle was joined on the first team by former Gilman and current Princeton teammate Damien Davis. Other local players that made the team were Brad Dumont (Princeton, McDonogh) and Scott Marimow (Penn, St. Paul's)

Toni JeffersonWestern, trackThe Doves senior won four gold medals at the Baltimore City Track and Field Championships. In the 100-meter dash, Jefferson ran 11.8 seconds, tying her own city record. She also won the 200 (24.8) and the long jump (18-3) in personal bests for this season, and she anchored the Doves' 800 relay team, which also ran its best time this season. A two-time All-Metro track performer and two-time All-City/County indoor track selection, Jefferson has signed with Maryland.

He also ran a leg of the Gators' county champion 1,600 relay (3: 38) at the Baltimore County Championships.

Trying to break top-ranked Mount St. Joseph's 20-year hold on the title, No. 5 Gilman holds a half-point lead over the host Gaels heading into the final day of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.Gilman, which put seven wrestlers in the semifinals plus five in the consolations yesterday, leads with 72 points. Mount St. Joe (71.5), shooting for its 21st straight MIAA or Maryland Scholastic Association title, has nine in the semifinals plus three more in the consolations.

A 21-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced Tuesday to life plus an additional 20 years in prison for murdering another man in an East Baltimore carryout restaurant in 2008, prosecutors said. Darius Duppins and Damien Davis, both teenagers at the time, entered the restaurant in the 2500 block of Hoffman Street in the Berea neighborhood on May 5, 2008, and approached Paris Richardson, 21, with handguns drawn, prosecutors said. Duppins shot Richardson eight times in the head, neck and torso, prosecutors said.
