Dame Joan Hammond,84, one of Britain's best-known divas, died Tuesday in Bowral, Australia.The opera singer was born in New Zealand, grew up in Australia and made her debut in London in 1938. In World War II, she pursued her operatic career and also sang at troop concerts.She retired from the stage in 1965 after doctors found she had a heart ailment and returned to Australia to teach singing.She was made a dame -- the female equivalent of a knight -- by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974 for her services to music.

Elsewhere Dame Wendy Hiller , 90, one of Britain's finest actresses and George Bernard Shaw's chosen leading lady, died Wednesday in Beaconsfield, England. She achieved fame early in her career as a girl from the slums in the 1934 Manchester Repertory production of Love on the Dole. Following her appearance in Anthony Asquith's film version of Pygmalion, Ms. Hiller starred in 1941 in Mr. Shaw's Major Barbara. She won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in Separate Tables (1958)

Young students from Anita's Dance Studio staged a recital last weekend at Notre Dame Preparatory School. The children had been rehearsing for the show, Lost in the Forest, since January. Anita's Dance Studio has been giving dance instruction for 59 years.
