RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brian Hodges said UMBC has watched the tape of Pittsburgh's 74-65 win over Georgetown in the Big East tournament "two or three times" to find some clues. But guard Jay Greene insisted yesterday the Retrievers will do more of what got them here. "We're just going to play our game, look to get out and run out there," Greene said. "We can definitely push the ball." Greene also said UMBC isn't awed by being here, playing today against one of the national powers. "This is the stage we want to be on. ... Rudy Gay didn't play the last 19 1/2 minutes, but he still helped lead the No. 4 Archbishop Spalding boys basketball team to a 49-39 victory at No. 12 McDonogh yesterday to end the Eagles' five-game winning streak. Gay sprained his right ankle and couldn't play, but his halftime plea motivated his teammates. McDonogh recently upset No. 1 Mount St. Joseph and No. 3 Cardinal Gibbons during its surge, but failed to take advantage of Gay's absence in the second half of yesterday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game.

Vasquez, a 6-foot-5 guard from Rockville's Montrose Christian, was one of four Terps recruits on display playing for Team USA in the sixth annual Charm City Challenge, which pits high school all-stars from the Baltimore metropolitan area against all-stars representing the rest of the United States. A native of Venezuela, where he played on the junior national team, Vasquez led all scorers with 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 92-88 loss to Baltimore.
