The University of Memphis gave Kentucky permission Monday to speak to John Calipari about the Wildcats' head coaching position, then made a final push to try to keep the coach. Some of Memphis' key boosters met with Calipari on Monday. One booster expects Calipari to go to Kentucky, though the person, speaking to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged the coach was torn between the two great opportunities. The Wildcats had a short meeting at their practice gym Monday afternoon.

DaJuan Summers (McDonogh) scored 16 points and Chris Wright had 13, including a crucial driving layup with 47 seconds left, to lead visiting Georgetown to a 56-54 victory over No. 10 Villanova yesterday. Georgetown (15-12, 6-10 Big East) forced the Wildcats into a season-high 20 turnovers and season lows in points, field goals (15) and field-goal percentage (.333). Dante Cunningham had 13 points to pace Villanova (23-6, 11-5) in a game played before a sellout of 20,378 at the Wachovia Center.

DaJuan Summers, The Sun 's Metro Boys Basketball Player of the Year last season from McDonogh, committed at the end of the summer to Georgetown and will make it official today by signing a national letter of intent. McDonogh senior forward Justin Drummond scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds, leading the host Eagles over top-ranked Mount St. Joseph, 56-49, yesterday in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference boys basketball game. The win was the seventh in eight games for McDonogh (12-9, 6-4) and second in three days over a top-5 opponent. The Eagles defeated No. 4 Cardinal Gibbons on Friday. McDonogh held the Gaels (19-2, 9-1) to two third-quarter points and got a solid defensive effort from center Dajuan Summers, who helped hold Will Thomas to 10 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR DaJuan Summers McDonogh Even though the Eagles did not match last season's success, Summers had another outstanding season to repeat as County Player of the Year. The Georgetown-bound 6-foot-9 senior forward was explosive in the paint and used his soft touch from the perimeter to average 20.3 points, nine rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 blocks for the Eagles (17-12). Last year's All-Metro Player of the Year, Summers, who scored 1,182 points in his final two years and 1,502 in three varsity seasons, closed an outstanding high school career with 29 points and nine rebounds in a 53-49 loss to No. 1 Mount St. Joseph in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinals.

Huisman puts swing in Spalding's step Sport baseball BOYS The hot hitting of Archbishop Spalding senior first baseman-designated hitter Chris Huisman has equated to the No. 6 Cavaliers' five-game winning streak, which includes an upset of top-ranked Calvert Hall. Huisman, who is headed to Johns Hopkins, leads the Cavaliers in batting (.563), with 18 hits in 32 at-bats, and in homers (four), doubles (four) and RBIs (12). He had two game-winning homers last week while going 9-for-14 (.643)

Henry Sims, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound All-Metro center from Mount St. Joseph, committed orally to Georgetown over the weekend. "When I visited, I really appreciated coach [John] Thompson's honesty about getting to play right away," said Sims, who narrowed down his choices to Georgetown and Virginia from a list that included Boston College, Florida and Maryland. "Coach Thompson told me that if I worked hard, I would get a chance as a freshman." This past season, DaJuan Summers - a two-time All-Metro forward and The Sun's Player of the Year in 2005 - started as a freshman for the Hoyas, who reached the Final Four.

After an eight-point lead evaporated in the third quarter, seventh-ranked Cardinal Gibbons regained control against No. 15 Towson Catholic and defeated the visiting Owls, 68-56, yesterday in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association boys basketball. Senior forward Brett Foelber scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, and senior center Leon Williams - after sitting most of the third because of foul trouble - scored seven of his 11 in the final period to help the Crusaders.
