Hoping to influence discussion of a new 10-year General Plan, Howard County preservationists have issued a new list of endangered historic sites. Two new sites are on the list this year, including the Ellicott City Historic District, which the group says is facing development pressures that threaten the integrity of the old river mill town. "They're chipping away at the edges of the district," said Mary Catherine Cochran, vice president of Preservation Howard County, which issues the annual list to draw attention to the fast-growing county's past.

Western Howard County residents who have battled for nearly two years to block a proposed used-car dealership in rural Daisy, dominated County Executive Ken Ulman's third annual town hall meeting Wednesday night in Ellicott City. Nine of the 16 speakers at the 73-minute forum at Mount Hebron High School talked about the car lot and business zoning in rural areas, and most urged Ulman to back the quick establishment of a citizens task force to study the issue before the county undertakes a once-a-decade general plan review.

Mark Twain's sadness and worries about money are all right there - hidden under the cross-dressing plot that puts a cigar-chomping gent in hoop skirts and hair bows, beneath the satirical swipes at the French, the art world and Limburger cheese. Is He Dead?, a recently discovered 1898 comedy by the great humorist and adapted by David Ives, has all the sparkle and brilliance of a shooting star. But it leaves behind a trail of dust, stones and space debris. In the farce, currently receiving a solid production at Olney Theatre Center, Twain cheekily placed a beloved, recent painter, Jean Francois Millet, in stage center.

A group hoping to block construction of a used car lot near Lisbon is trying to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. The site in Daisy has been zoned commercial for more than 50 years, and other vehicle-related businesses operate there. But more than 200 residents met to protest when they learned about plans for a 3,850-square-foot building and 155-vehicle lot on 4.2 acres at Daisy and Union Chapel roads. County officials have said they can't stop the legal use of a property owner's land.

Brad Pitt runs Shakespeare's "seven ages of man" in reverse in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which ranks with the best films about youth (say, Hope and Glory) and mortality (say, The Dead). It starts in 1918, when Benjamin Button is born with an old face and dilapidated plumbing and wrinkled skin over an infant body, and ends in 2005, when his true love, Daisy (Cate Blanchett), completes the telling of his story. Every chapter in between brings with it a fresh air of discovery. And the movie's emotional completeness leaves you poised between sobbing and applauding - it comes from a full comprehension not just of one man's life, but of the intersection of many lives over the course of the 20th century.

The second season of Pushing Daisies starts on ABC tonight, and that's an event worth getting a little excited about. No other new series last fall reached as high as this one. It had an offbeat, post-modern fairy-tale sensibility and superb acting. Chuck (Anna Friel) goes undercover tonight to solve a murder in a world so weird it could only be a setting for this series. (8 p.m. ABC) *** Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money also return tonight, on ABC at 9 and 10, respectively. But I did not miss them when they left the airwaves last year, and I am not going to act like I could care that they are back tonight.
