The Washington Capitals recalled goalie Byron Dafoe, center Steve Konowalchuk and right wing Pat Peake from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League yesterday. With his team 0-5 -- two games away from tying the club's all-time season-opening losing streak and four from their all-time opening winless streak -- general manager David Poile didn't try to hide the reason."We're obviously trying to put as much pressure as possible on the current roster," Poile said. "I want it made clear that no one is guaranteed a spot, game-to-game.

After a fast, smart start, "White Sands" implodes like a black hole, sucking all goodwill from the atmosphere of the theater, turning those of us who started to love it into embittered cuckolds.Great setup: Willem Dafoe, a deputy sheriff in New Mexico, comes across the body of a possible suicide in the desert. Besides a bullet in the head and a gun in the hand, the stiff is clutching (with the other hand) a suitcase loaded with $500,000 in small, dirty bills.Everything in the early sequences is absolutely first rate.

The Skipjacks finally are on a winning streak. It may be a small one -- two games -- but it's still something that was missing for nearly two months.Last night, before 5,415 at the Baltimore Arena, the Skipjacks defeated the Rochester Americans, 3-2, in an AHL Southern Division game for their second straight win after winning only twice in 21 previous games.Ken Sabourin, Ken Lovsin and Reggie Savage scored for Baltimore. Savage's third-period goal on a nifty cross-slot pass from Simon Wheeldon was the clincher and gave the Skipjacks a 3-1 lead with 4:13 remaining.
