The fate of a recurring character on NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent will be placed firmly in the hands of the show's viewers. In what may be a first for TV, producers and cast have shot two endings for the episode airing tonight, which revolves around the character Nicole Wallace, played by Olivia D'Abo. Wallace will die on one coast and live on the other. Viewers then will have a chance to vote online on whether she comes back. "Cool counts, and that's all we thought, that this would be pretty cool," said series star Vincent D'Onofrio.

For the nation's two best-known military academies, the annual Army-Navy football game is a matter of institutional bragging rights -- a gridiron war aimed at getting the other's goat. Or mule. But for this year's 100th meeting, the mayors of Annapolis, home of the Naval Academy, and Highland Falls, a New York village of 6,000 a few miles from the Military Academy, also have a little on the line.Joseph E. D'Onofrio, mayor of Highland Falls, threw down the glove last week and sent Dean L. Johnson, his Annapolis counterpart, a letter daring him to place a bet on the Dec. 4 game.

Trailing by three goals late in the fourth quarter, there was never a second of doubt for the Glenelg boys lacrosse team in Friday's Class 3A-2A state semifinals game against Kent Island at Annapolis High School. Well, maybe there was a moment or two when it looked like the No. 11 Gladiators' season would come to an end. Then, the experience of reaching the state semifinal in each of the last seven seasons kicked in. Led by junior Nick Forrest, Glenelg scored four goals in the final 2 minutes, 51 seconds to secure a 10-9 victory.

DYING YOUNG'' plays a little like Bette Davis' ''Dark Victory.'' It also has touches of ''Educating Rita'' and ''Pretty Woman,'' one of Julia Roberts' previous films. Its trouble is that it doesn't play as well as any of those films. The actors are personable, the direction is steady, but the movie, a four-ply weeper, is one of those by-the-number things with nary a surprise. It also lacks cuteness, which a movie of this sort needs. A film as predictable as this one is seriously in need of scenes that stand out, scenes that give the movie a little life, no pun intended.

"The Cell" looks spectacular. If only it never opened its mouth. First-time director Tarsem Singh, a veteran of the music-video scene, crams this excursion into a tortured psyche with so much vividly wondrous imagery that he nearly compensates for a story that takes a while to get going, roars through all the pretty scenery, then stumbles to the finish line as the filmmakers apparently lose interest. Jennifer Lopez stars as Catherine Deane, the world's most well-coifed psychologist, so intuitively sensitive to her charges' needs that her colleagues regard her as special (sorry, that's about as deep as the analysis of Lopez's character goes)

Adolescence is the classic example of something that would be funny if it weren't so disturbing and fraught with danger. Thumbsucker, the story of a teen who can't quite get it together, captures that ambiguity in a story that understands the importance of both perspectives. It also hits on a larger truth - that nobody, adolescent or not, ever gets it together completely. And just when you think you have, you surely haven't. Seventeen-year-old Justin (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a loner and underachiever, idling his way through school.

The Fallston boys lacrosse team made the final quarter of the season its finest in Tuesday's Class 2A-1A state semifinal against South Carroll. The No. 15 Cougars scored six unanswered goals to turn a close game into a 14-7 win over the Cavaliers at UMBC Stadium.
