Over the past few weeks, the dinner conversation sometimes got a little overheated at Jack and Will D'Angelo's Reisterstown home. With Jack playing for Calvert Hall's football team and younger brother Will playing for Loyola's, there wasn't much to agree upon when talk turned to the Turkey Bowl coming up at M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday morning. For the 93rd time, Calvert Hall and Loyola will meet on Thanksgiving Day, but this will be the first time that Jack, a senior starting lineman, and Will, a sophomore reserve receiver, square off. Athletes since they were little, both brothers have strong competitive streaks and, of course, that comes out in everything from pick-up basketball games in the driveway to video games in the basement to conversations about the Turkey Bowl at the dinner table.

It was evident from watching Annapolis Shakespeare Company's director and cast members rehearse Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors" that this young company is making astonishing strides - not small steps, but artful leaps. It was also clear that the show's opening would be a lively comic treat. Last year, I reported on ASC's progress from a small workshop taught by Sally Boyett-D'Angelo in summer 2009 into a thriving young company that had already become a full member of the county's established nonprofit performing-arts community.

There just aren't enough courtroom dramas playing out on television these days, are there? The latest to be thrown into the mix is NBC's two-part movie "Trial: The Price of Passion," scheduled for 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, and it's not all that interesting -- even for fiction. It's on a par with Danielle Steel for realism, but not quite as romantic -- a hokey, sex-filled soap opera based on improbable coincidences and cookie-cutter characters that's lifted only by a cast that includes Peter Strauss, Beverly D'Angelo, Jill Clayburgh and Ned Beatty.

With 13 Grammy nominations going to a pair of rookie soul singers, India.Arie and Alicia Keys, soul music is industry-certified as the latest big thing. The fast rise of these two performers and the general acclaim flowing toward their peers -- including Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, D'Angelo and Eric Benet -- have the feel of a movement gathering force and demanding attention. This surge of artists who share ideas and influences even has a name: neo-soul. But let's be real. Of the 100 tunes on Billboard's latest tally of "Hot R&B / Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks," only a handful could be called soul -- the strain of R&B that prizes melody and songcraft as much as rhythm, and brings the fervor of gospel music to matters of the heart as well as wider social concerns.
