Cub Scout Pack 269, sponsored by the Four Seasons Women's Club, presented achievement and advancement awards to its members during a recent meeting at Four Seasons Elementary School.Cubmaster Mark Hagensick presented the Arrow of Light to Mark Tyler and Sean Linton. Patrick Price received the Bear badge.Webelos activity badges were presented to Brett Bosher, Joe Danahy, Brad Hurst, Michael Innes, Bart Maxwell, Matt Seaton, Marty Shatzer and Mark Tyler for citizenship; Michael Innes for travel, and Mark Tyler for art. Michael Innes and Mark Tyler also received a compass point device.

Patrick Mullen of Cub Scout Pack 663 was honored recently during a liturgy at St. Bernadette Church in Severn.The 8-year-old son of Patrick and Regina Mullen earned the Parvuli Dei Award, a religious emblem of the Catholic faith earned by Cub Scouts. For three months, Patrick performed community service, studied with his parish priest, the Rev. Domenic Cieri, and conducted prayer services at home.Among those celebrating Patrick's achievement were his parents, his sister, Kelly, his grandparents Tom and Jeanne Matthews, Betty Mullen, Bear Den Leader George Yeager and Cub Scout Pack 663 Cubmaster Linda Fonteneau.

Arg!! It's coming, it's almost here. Oh no-o-o, Beach Season!A winter's worth of holiday dinners, and a spring's worth ofbarbecues have brought me to this awful pass -- it's summer and my shorts are too tight. Of course, if I were to adopt a sensible eating and exercise plan I'd be in fine shape by July. But if I could do that, I'd never have gotten into this mess in the first place.So what to do? The answer came to me while driving the Beltway last week. I often get weird ideas on the Beltway; must be the fumes.

The 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry defeated the 7th Tennessee and 19th Georgia infantry units yesterday. The Union is still intact.The Civil War re-enactment took place as members of Cub Scout Pack 110 of Eldersburg and their families witnessed the scene on Vernon Sill's farm in Gamber.Against a backdrop of trees, the Union soldiers positioned themselves on a hill while the Confederates took cover behind trees and in a stream beside steep banks.Shouting taunts at each other, they began firing their rifles.

Flames leapt from a second-story window. A shroud of smoke engulfed the building where someone was trapped. A gasp went up from the crowd drawn to the spectacle.A fire truck from Cape St. Claire clanged onto the scene. Soon, the blaze was snuffed, the house saved, with its occupants unscathed.About 2,500 people at Sunday's Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Expo at Millersville headquarters applauded.Some, like 5-month-old Jessi Bond, napped through it all.The event was designed to give the public an idea of what the departments do, and maybe recruit new officers.
