Cub Scouts in Pack 678 received the Arrow of Light award as they prepared to bridge to Boy Scouts at last month's Blue and Gold banquet held at Mayfield Woods Middle School.Road Runner Den leaders David Porter, Wayne Blithe and Carl McKinney and Bat Den leaders Len Langford, Tim Lay and Dave Holl were present when Pack 678 Scoutmaster Neal Einsidler presented the awards to: Jonathan Blithe, Bernie Gabin, TC Brandon Liang, Dana Melvin, Patrick McKinney, Christopher Porter, Russell Holl, Derrick Jameson, Nathan Langford, Tim Lay, Nicholas Marinelli and Matt Slanga.

Christmas trees sold by Cub Scout Pack 790 of Hampstead are going, going, gone.The last of 150 trees was sold Sunday, ending the tree sale by the Cubs and parents after only three weeks.Pack 790 appreciated support of local businesses, including JCK Tree Farm of Taneytown, which provided trees at a discount and donated a few extras.Maryland Septic delivered them to Robert's Field, Straight Line Fence of Manchester donated an outdoor shed and Schaeffer Mulch provided wood for the fire barrel.

Has your child brought a BUG home from Stevens Forest Elementary School?"Being Unusually Good" certificates are given by teachers to students for exceptional behavior, a random act of kindness or being a good friend.The BUG is given at any time, and recipients will be recognized during the school's monthly assembly.*It is always a pleasure to report a good deed. Children who attended the 25 sessions of Alberta Gray United Methodist Church Bible School donated pennies each week to purchase a water buffalo for an overseas family.

Odenton Elementary School has established a program to encourage budding young writers to put their thoughts on paper.The Primary Publishing Center augments the standard reading program to help children in kindergarten, first- and second-grades and special education classes enhance their reading and writing skills, strengthen their self-esteem and stimulate their creative thinking skills.Parent volunteers run the program. Dina Wanamaker heads the effort with help from Jackie Grove, Carman Sepulveda and Anna Olson.

It was a night of awards and welcome recently as Cub Scout Pack 663 had its annual school night at Quarterfield Elementary School.The pack party Sept. 22 introduced prospective Scouts to Scouting activities and the den leaders. Thirty-five Scouts were welcomed into the pack.The awards presented were:* Bobcat Badge to Brandon Cato.L * Wolf Badge to Jordon Fly, Andrew Dobrzykowski and Brandon.* Fitness Belt Loop to Andrew Carter, Clarence Allen, Ian Hines and Jordon.* Whittling Chip to Patrick Mullen.

Cub Scout packs all over the county are preparing for their first meetings. For parents who wish to enroll their sons, now is the time.Boys can join a Cub Scout unit near their home, with meetings held in local elementary schools.Cub Scout groups, called "packs," are broken down into dens made up of boys in the same grade in school.Tiger Cubs is for boys in the first grade and groups meet twice each month.Cub Scouts is for boys in grades two to five. Each boy belongs to a pack, and then will be assigned to a den.Here is a list of Cub Scout packs in West Columbia.

Boys in grades one through five can make new friends, learn crafts, go on field trips and help their community, all by joining Cub Scout Pack 663.The pack is holding a party at 7 p.m. Thursday at Quarterfield Elementary School. OK! Enough of this slush! Between the ice storms and melting snow, I haven't built a snow person this year. Argh! Can it really be winter without a snowman or a snow bunny? The wise among you will quickly realize that snow bunnies go up much faster than snow men. All you need is a large snowball and magnolia leaves for the ears. A few leaves weren't all that fell from the magnolia last week, a 6-foot branch did, too.My niece and nephew, home with me during the school closings, firmly believe that if life gives you free lemons, you make lemonade.

Cub Scout Pack 269, sponsored by the Four Seasons Women's Club, presented achievement and advancement awards to its members during a recent meeting at Four Seasons Elementary School.Cubmaster Mark Hagensick presented the Arrow of Light to Mark Tyler and Sean Linton. Patrick Price received the Bear badge.Webelos activity badges were presented to Brett Bosher, Joe Danahy, Brad Hurst, Michael Innes, Bart Maxwell, Matt Seaton, Marty Shatzer and Mark Tyler for citizenship; Michael Innes for travel, and Mark Tyler for art. Michael Innes and Mark Tyler also received a compass point device.
