Kiss and Motley Crue performed at Jiffy Lube Live on Friday night. Midnight Sun contributor Jay Trucker was there. Thirty years after they first toured together, Kiss and Motley Crue are back out on the road, opening their 2012 summer tour on an intermittently stormy night in Bristow. But if Crue is officially the opening act on this tour, their bigger stage show, equal-lengthed setlist and more frenzied audience suggests otherwise.  Motley Crue's stage show is a spectacle.

The fact that all four are still alive is nothing short of miraculous. The original members of Motley Crue - lead singer Vince Neil, bassist Nikki Sixx, lead guitarist Mick Mars and drummer Tommy Lee - spent much of the Reagan era wasted on drugs and alcohol and partying with groupies around the world. The wild times were funneled into the music, producing some of the most enduring hits in heavy metal: "Live Wire," "Dr. Feelgood," "Girls, Girls, Girls" and one of the genre's best ballads, "Home Sweet Home."

When Motley Crue reunited in 2004 following a four-year hiatus — five years for drummer Tommy Lee, who'd gone solo in 1999 — few believed the group would stick together for much longer than one last, valedictory, squeeze-it-for-all-it's-worth tour. Soon enough, the members would be fighting, pulling temper tantrums, wanting to flee to solo projects, and the bad press would push the band into just another "Behind the Music" episode. Or so the conventional wisdom went. But seven years later, the Crue is still together.

MOTLEY CRUEMotley Crue (Elektra 61534)Because the singer is usually seen as being a band's "face," a lot of folks figured that Motley Crue would be a mess without Vince Neil. Well, they figured wrong. As "Motley Crue" makes plain, new singer John Corabi has no trouble taking Neil's place, delivering "Hooligan's Holiday" with an authoritative howl and slipping a nasty snarl into the sound of "Hammered." But the album's real strength is the noise made by the rest of Crue. From the Aerosmith-style boogie of "Welcome to the Numb" to turn-it-up crunch of "Power to the Music," this band has never sounded stronger.

And even though they haven't been the easiest of partings -- "We're actually in litigation," he says of his split with the Crue -- Neil couldn't be happier with the way things are going.

John Allen's career trajectory has, so far, been pretty standard. Local rocker knocks around in a few moderately successful rock outfits, settles into a group that plays Hammerjack's and the Recher, gathers a following, gets a song played on the radio a few times, opens for Motley Crue and gets signed to a record label by one of the band members. OK, maybe that last thing is a little bit extraordinary. Playing a gig in front of a few hundred Baltimoreans is plenty cool and all that. But getting tapped for this summer's Crue Fest 2, and being signed to Crue bassist and songwriter Nikki Sixx's Eleven Seven Music?
