Golf tourney to benefit Broadneck High sportsCounty golfers are invited to play in the Bruin Golf Tournament Monday at Bay Hills Golf Club in Arnold.The $75-a-person tournament, sponsored by the Broadneck High School Athletic Boosters, will benefit the school's athletic department.The tournament will be a best ball format, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and tee-off at 9:00 a.m. There will be many prizes and drawings, including a dozen dinners for two and trophies for winning teams.Those interested may contact Dave Branning at 757-7822 in the evenings.

Church starts Phase IIWoods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park is beginning Phase II of an extensive building project, whichincludes two large rooms to accommodate overflow homeless people from area shelters.The church earlier this year completed the first of a three-phase, $6 million project, which doubled worship space with a 575-seat sanctuary addition and a new educational wing.About two years ago, the church began planning for an extensive 10-year building project. The first phase of the expansion, which cost several million dollars, took just over a year.

A group of Crownsville residents opposed to the selection of a site near their homes for a new county jail is organizing a protest tonight when a task force is to make its final recommendation to the county executive.Susan Litzau, who lives across Crownsville Road from the Fischer property, one of several the task force is considering for the 650-bed jail, said she has collected 1,000 signatures from nearby residents on a petition opposing the site.The site off state Route 178 overlaps property the Renaissance Festival leases from the Fischer family.
