Cross-country skiers, alas, can't escape Baltimore's balmy weather for trails covered by machine-made snow: The kick-and-glide set needs the real thing. But there's a ray of hope, if you're willing to make the drive. Garrett County, the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania and Canaan Valley, W.Va., have been socked with a series of winter snowstorms over the last few weeks. It's the first Thursday of 1994. My new calendar has been hung in the kitchen with care. My 6-day-old resolutions are still in working order. And my tree and ornaments are clearly marked and packed away (just kidding). The beginning of the year is a time for action, and the Chesapeake Dance Theatre and the Central County chapter of the American Red Cross have combined forces to stoke your fire to get through the long winter months ahead.Tomorrow night the stage at Severna Park High School will be turned over to children and the child in you for two performances of "It's Your Turn on Stage."

Clarksville resident Tatyana McFadden won the women's wheelchair race in the London Marathon on Sunday, six days after her win in the Boston Marathon. "The race is definitely dedicated to Boston and we had huge support from London, which was amazing," McFadden said during the post-race news conference. "Just the support that we're getting around the world means a lot, especially back in Boston and to the athletes. " McFadden, whose 1:46.02 time was a record mark for London, won the Boston Marathon wheelchair event Monday.

PRAGELATO PLAN, Italy -- For a nation that at times seemed lukewarm about hosting the Winter Olympics, the final day of the sports extravaganza brought a nice parting gift. A shot of adrenaline. The jolt came from a boisterous crowd that lined the cross-country skiing course yesterday morning, and from Giorgio di Centa, who gave them something to cheer about at the end. The Italian stayed with the lead pack for the better part of two hours, then sprinted away in the final few hundred meters to win the men's 50-kilometer race.

The Baltimore Ski Club, which was founded in 1939, is a group of between 800 to 1,000 local ski enthusiasts. The group sponsors approximately 20 skiing trips per year, about 13 or 14 to West Coast ski resorts and the rest to East Coast slopes. The trips, which are between one and seven days in duration, are put together and run by various members of the club."Generally we have about 30 or 40 people on each trip," says Sheldon Hyman, director of the Baltimore Ski Club. "On Eastern trips, you'll have three or four people who have never skied before.

Cross-country skiing Lina Andersson and Anna Dahlberg TV: NBC, 4-5 p.m. -- It had been 38 years since a Swedish woman -- and 18 years since any Swede -- had won a gold medal in cross-country skiing. The Swedes ended the drought Tues day when Andersson and Dahlberg combined to win the 10-kilometer team sprint. Sweden also won the men's event 20 minutes later. Not that the Swedes are boasting about it, but at least some of the credit has to go to the Norwegian coach they hired in 2004. "I've been under great pressure, and I've had a big mouth and promised great results," the coach, Inge Braten, told the Associated Press.

OAKLAND -- Carole Day awakes in a winter wonderland.Fresh snow has fallen overnight, dusting trees and carpeting the ice-crusted ground that made cross-country skiing so treacherous the day before at Herrington Manor State Park in Garrett County.Mrs. Day, a bookkeeper from Rockville, intends to get one more run on the groomed trails that crisscross the 300-acre park northwest of Oakland before she and her husband head home. She downs a hearty breakfast, slips on a blue parka, grabs a pair of rented skis and emerges from a rustic cabin, ready to kick and glide through "hundreds and hundreds of pine trees" one last time.
