Howard County police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that sent a woman in critical condition to Maryland Shock Trauma Center Tuesday night. Police are categorizing the crash as a "serious personal injury collision. " The collision occurred at about 8:45 p.m. when Mary Ann Cecile Levant, 64, of Columbia, was traveling east on Route 32 near Route 29 in a 2003 Toyota Avalon. Levant lost control of the vehicle and struck the guardrail on the shoulder of the road, police said.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the upper back Friday night in West Baltimore, police said Saturday. The shooting happened on the 200 block of North Monroe Street, police said. The victim, whose name was not released, went to an apartment on the 1700 block of West Lexington Street, where police arrived around 8:15 p.m. The man was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical but stable condition Saturday, police said. They released no details on a possible motive or suspect.

Anne Arundel County Police Department received a call at 5:52 p.m. Sunday evening that a man had been struck by lightning at Fort Smallwood Park. A man who was struck by lightning while fishing in Anne Arundel County remains hospitalized in critical condition, while officials with the National Weather Service investigate whether Sunday's strong storms produced a tornado in Harford County. Authorities identified the injured man as Elmer Coreas, 29, of Glen Burnie. He had been fishing off a pier at Fort Smallwood Park when he was struck about 5:40 p.m. Sunday.

A gunman shot two police officers at the main entrance to the Pentagon on Thursday night, calmly pulling a gun from his coat pocket and shooting without saying a word before he was seriously wounded in a flurry of return fire, said Chief Richard Keevill of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency. The shooting occurred at 6:40 p.m. near the end of rush hour at the public entrance of the Defense Department headquarters, near where commuters pick up Metro trains and buses. No bystanders were hit. Injuries to the officers, who work for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, did not appear life-threatening, said Chris Layman, a spokesman for the agency.

The Baltimore police officer who fell off an elevated section of the Jones Falls Expressway in an accident Tuesday remained hospitalized in critical condition after undergoing two surgeries, one to repair a fractured leg and pelvis. Officer Teresa Rigby also underwent facial reconstruction surgery at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to a Police Department spokesman. The 27-year-old who patrolled North Baltimore was in intensive care late Wednesday afternoon and her condition had stabilized.

A man who police said was alert and talking after being shot in the arm by a city sheriff's deputy last week is now in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital, according to a hospital spokesman. The wounded man's mother said her son is on life support. How 36-year-old Jontae L. Daughtry's condition worsened is unclear. His mother, Sherrell Daughtry, 57, said a neurologist told her that her son's brain is swollen "due to a hit. " She also said that doctors told her that her son had become combative with law enforcement authorities, had to be sedated and then suffered an allergic reaction to the medicine.

Jockey Santos Chavez was injured yesterday when his mount Bobbies Brass broke down in the third race at Laurel Race Course. Chavez, 38, a native of Lima, Peru, was flown by helicopter from the track to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was listed in critical condition last night. Family friend Dave Barry of Dundalk, who was with Chavez at the hospital last night, said the rider was conscious and talking. Barry said Chavez had a broken wrist and concussion. He was expected to spend the night at the hospital.
