Just about everyone is talking about the price of gasoline, and no wonder: Gas for less than $3 a gallon is receding in memory, and at some stations in California and Hawaii, the price at the pump tops $4. That, of course, is why bedandbreakfast.com has launched its Tanks a Lot promotion for the fifth year, with inns across the nation putting their discounts directly into your gas tank. Some examples: Through Oct. 18, Pilgrim's Inn and Cottages, Deer Isle, Maine, (pilgrimsinn.com) will reward guests arriving in a hybrid vehicle up to $40 for a tank of gas. At the Ruby of Crested Butte, Crested Butte, Colo.

When the Bogner-bedecked, plastic-booted crowd heads for the lifts in the mornings, I go exploring. I am that pariah of the slopes, a non-skier.I wander down the streets of the mountain villages, poke my head into shops, stand at the bottom of the lifts and watch the symmetrical beauty of skiers schussing gracefully down the slopes. I ride into the nearby town, if there is one, and check out the old places, the mining-town saloons that have become chic bars, the one-time assay offices that require a modern bag of gold for the smart clothes they now stock, the big old Victorian homes that have taken on new life as trendy restaurants.

It's not easy being 3 -- especially at a ski resort. Just ask Ethan Sitzman, who is 3 1 / 2 (not 3!) and heading to ski school for the first time at Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado. There are all those clothes to put on: long underwear, fleece sweat shirt, heavy socks, ski pants and jacket, goggles, ski helmet, waterproof mittens and the orange bib tied over his jacket that designates Ethan as a ski school cub who hasn't yet learned to stop on his skis. How come the mittens keep falling off?
