Third base is expected to be a point of contention during Baltimore Orioles spring training in Sarasota, Fla., this year, but Leo Gomez apparently doesn't want to wait that long.In Miami for the Caribbean World Series this week, Gomez has challenged the Orioles to trade him or Craig Worthington, the incumbent at the position for two seasons."If they don't trade Craig Worthington, I want them to trade me," Gomez was quoted as saying in USA Today yesterday. "Somebody has to get out of there."

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Craig Worthington is in the process of putting a lock on the third base job, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Orioles will place Leo Gomez on the trading block. It doesn't mean they won't either, but general manager Roland Hemond says the Orioles long ago established a precedent against making hasty decisions in such situations."Remember Don Baylor and Bobby Grich?" Hemond asked after the Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 17-9 in a wind tunnel at Vero Beach.

* BARRY BONDS -- The best player in the National League last year is the unhappiest player in the major leagues this year. Bonds has been feuding openly with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization since he lost his salary arbitration case.* DARREN DAULTON -- The Philadelphia Phillies gave Daulton a three-year contract worth $6.75 million and helped kick off another free agent free-for-all last November. Will it prove to be a worthwhile investment or another Philly front office folly?* CRAIG WORTHINGTON -- The Sporting News named Worthington its American League Rookie of the Year in 1989.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Time for a worst-case scenario:What if Leo Gomez and Chris Hoiles don't pan out?Not likely, but you never know. Gomez, 25, is the Orioles' new third baseman. Hoiles, 27, is the new catcher. Together with Bill Ripken, they comprise the lower third of the club's batting order. It will be helpful if they can hit.Hoiles continued easing doubts in yesterday's 6-5 loss to Minnesota, hitting his fourth homer and an RBI double to raise his average to .286 and take over the club lead -- non-Cal Ripken division -- with 10 RBIs.

Frank Robinson took the fall yesterday, but Baltimore Orioles players acknowledge there is plenty of blame to spread around.Pitcher Jeff Ballard, the player representative, who informed much of the team by telephone about Robinson's firing as manager, said: "Sure, I think everyone has to take his fair share [of the blame]. We're the ones losing games."The firing shocked some.I'm extremely surprised," said relief ace Gregg Olson. "We haven't been playing well, but I just didn't think it would ever result in something like this.

Queen Elizabeth II came to Memorial Stadium last night, ostensibly to sample a slice of Americana on her tour of the colonies. Instead, she got to see the Baltimore Orioles make baseball look like the irrational pastime. The Orioles have a long and distinguished tradition of defensive excellence, but their command performance quickly became anexperiment in error. Almost everything that could go wrong did ++ on the way to a 6-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics.First baseman Randy Milligan hit two home runs and Craig Worthington hit one. But the three homers off Oakland starter Bob Welch (4-2)

IT'S here, Dave -- this awaited, bittersweet day! Final opener at venerable Memorial Stadium, for us the scene of baseball memories so rich, so overflowing, one can hardly choose the most treasured. You, the world's most devoted Oriole fan, fly from Cleveland to continue our Opening Day tradition, and, while the game has its importance (first chance to see Glenn Davis and Dwight Evans in Bird uniforms), the knowledge that this is the last start at 33rd Street will never be absent.Oh, the new Camden Yards park will be something of a gem, avoiding the sterility of recent Astroturf stadiums.
