Dan Rodricks ' recommendation for a one-year moratorium on the crab harvest is correct ( "It's time to stop tinkering and just ban crabbing for one year," May 3). The members of the Maryland General have a history of not showing courage when faced with the facts. It took them several sessions to really put "teeth" into the laws on seat belts and with laws restricting cell phone use while driving. When it became apparent that the shad population was in danger, they finally took action, and in a couple of years the shad run was again in full swing.

The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab is an omnivore. If a favorite food like worms, plants or baby clams is unavailable, it switches to something else. Maryland's human denizens may want to seriously consider doing that same thing. That's because the latest news regarding one of Maryland's favorite seafood delicacies isn't good. For the second straight year, the bay's crab population is in decline, with the number of female crabs - the most critical factor for future reproduction - below what biologists regard as safe to maintain the current stock.

A couple of years ago, the governor of Maryland stood on a dock on South River, a bushel of steamed crabs at his feet, telling everyone it was OK to eat Chesapeake blue crabs again - sort of like the mayor in "Jaws" telling everyone it was OK to go back in the water. "I am glad to report that the population of the blue crab is now at a 19-year high," the governor said in April 2012. There was so much excitement about the comeback of the blue crab that the state launched a "True Blue" marketing campaign, identifying and promoting restaurants and markets selling Chesapeake lump.

The Chesapeake Bay's blue crab population remains in a serious slump for the second straight year, with the number of females dropping to a dangerously low level, officials announced Thursday. Severe winter weather, not overfishing, is largely to blame, officials said. But to improve chances of a rebound, Maryland and Virginia both plan to cut back on the bay harvest this year - a move likely to hurt the region's struggling watermen and cost crab-loving consumers, pushing high prices higher still.

For the past four years, the Baltimore-based Trigger Agency has produced the Chesapeake Crab & Beer Festival at National Harbor in Prince George's County. This year, the event producers are bringing the one-day, all-you-can-eat crab feast to Baltimore, too. The Chesapeake Crab & Beer Festival is scheduled for June 21 at the Inner Harbor's West Shore Park. Tickets are being sold for two eating sessions - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The basic ticket price is $79 for the early session and $89 for the late session, with discounts for children and designated drivers.

Larry Hogan, chairman of the conservative activist group Change Maryland, will officially announce on January 21 he is a Republican candidate for governor. The former appointments secretary to Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. sent an e-mail to supporters Sunday saying he would make the announcement at Mike's Restaurant & Crab House in Riva. Hogan said in November that he planned to seek the nomination. He will join a field that includes Harford County Executive David R. Craig, Del. Ron George of Anne Arundel County and Charles County business executive Charles Lollar.

" - Pauline Guiragoss The Eastern Shore met the Middle East in East Baltimore recently when a woman from Tilghman Island taught a woman from Lebanon to make Maryland crab soup. It began with a passing comment in The Baltimore Sun's Taste section: "The best crab soup I've ever had is made by … Kelly Belk, who puts a deep tang into her broth with cabbage. " The mention was enough for Beirut native and Canton restaurateur Pauline Guiragoss to ask her friend Belk for a lesson in preparing Chesapeake Bay crab soup the traditional way. "All the recipes I've learned are from my friends," said the well-traveled Guiragoss, 49, who with husband John Curtis owned three restaurants before opening Gitan Bistro Cru at the corner of Fait and South Kenwood avenues.

Several of the area's top defensive players took the field for Baltimore Saturday in the sixth annual Maryland Army National Guard Crab Bowl senior all-star game. After the first 10 minutes, however, that fact was anything but apparent. The Washington, D.C.-area team scored long touchdowns on two of its first three plays from scrimmage, putting the local squad in an early hole from which it never recovered in a 30-21 loss at McDaniel College. "We told the kids it's about big plays - who's going to step up and make them," Baltimore coach Sean Murphy, the coach of Archbishop Curley, said.

In the first five years of the Maryland Crab Bowl senior all-star game, the Baltimore-area team has failed to win consecutive games. This year's squad will have a chance start a winning streak after last year's beat the Washington, D.C.-area seniors 28-7, led by former Gilman safety Wyatt Dickerson's two first half interceptions and touchdowns from Stephen Scott (Poly), Garrett Bean (Westminster), Michael Anderson (Howard) and Isaiah Gills (Harford Tech). But with a new crop of seniors, Baltimore coach Sean Murphy - who led Archbishop Curley to a 9-2 record this year - said he expects the sixth Crab Bowl on Saturday be completely different.
