Queen Latifah breezed onto the floor of the CoverGirl plant in Hunt Valley yesterday, tall and impressive, aglow in pinks and browns. She was there to take a look at CoverGirl's newest product, a line of cosmetics made especially for women of color - the Queen Collection - inspired by the rapper-turned-movie actress/jazz singer/makeup model herself. But her presence there had a greater impact. From the cheering and preening going on among the plant's employees, it was clear Queen Latifah's visit was a morale booster and an inspiration.

It is one of Baltimore's best-kept secrets, but it is a fact. Beauty begins in Hunt Valley. On an unassuming part of York Road, nearly hidden among squat hobby shops and antiques stores, sits the international headquarters for the largest, possibly most-recognizable cosmetics company in the nation. CoverGirl -- home to such famous faces as Christie Brinkley, Molly Sims and Tyra Banks -- has been in Baltimore County since 1966. There it sits, across the street from a Midas and a Firestone, Andy Nelson's BBQ and a KFC, a campus of nondescript buildings and lush green trees.

You've probably seen a lot of soul singer Toni Braxton in the last 11 months. There was the video for "You're Makin' Me High" that found the Severn native dressed in a skin-tight white cat suit, and another clip for "I Don't Want To" where she made old jeans look more appealing than any Calvin Klein ad. Plus there were all those awards show appearances in which she demonstrated a gift for making a little bit of fabric go a looo-o-ong way.But if you haven't...

Aladrian Crowder and Kate Moss don't have a whole lot in common. For instance: Crowder, 17, says makeup feels "like bugs crawling on my face." She's going to major in chemical engineering, but she's not into recreational chemicals. And she eats! "I eat a half-gallon of ice cream in three days by myself," she says with pride. "I love eating. I love food." Despite such high-fashion heresies, Crowder's knockout face will beam from the cover of Essence magazine in August. Earlier this month, the senior at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science won the Essence Cover Model Search.

Jinx Falkenburg, 84, one of America's highest-paid cover-girl models during World War II, and later, with husband Tex McCrary, a pioneer talk-show star on radio and television, died Wednesday in Manhasset, N.Y. At one point in the 1950s, "Tex and Jinx," as they were known in virtually every American household, had two radio programs, a five-day-a-week television show and a syndicated column in The New York Herald Tribune.
