Mason-Dixon Bancshares Corp. said yesterday that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Bank Maryland Corp. of Towson.Mason-Dixon, parent of Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., will pay $11.8 million in cash and give Bank Maryland shareholders 278,000 shares of Mason-Dixon stock, said company President Thomas K. Ferguson. The overall value of the deal is $26.3 million, or $13 per share of Bank Maryland stock.Mr. Ferguson said the deal is expected to close by June 30, 1995, pending approval from stockholders and regulators.

The Board of County Commissioners are citing a bank mistake for errors in the deposit of customers' payments of water and property tax bills - which county officials said affected some 230 accounts. In a press release dated, Jan. 17, the county said that on Jan. 5, officials deposited checks and cash payments made to the county by property owners for water bills and property tax bills to the county bank, BB&T. On Jan, 6, the bank submitted the checks to the various institutions for payment.

Directors of Mason-Dixon Bancshares, parent corporation of Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., have declared a 34-cents-per-share dividend. The dividend, payable Wednesday, will be paid to stockholders of record as of June 3, 1994.The second-quarter dividend reflects an increase of 6.25 percent above the previous dividend paid.Earnings for the three months ending March, 31, 1994, totaled $1,850,994, an increase of 10 percent over the same period in 1993. Net income per share was $1.27, compared with $1.16 for the same period in 1993 (average shares outstanding of 1,454,634 and 1,452,134)

Mason Dixon Bancshares Inc., parent corporation of Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., has declared a dividend of 34 cents per share, which will be paid to stockholders of record as of tomorrow.Earnings for the six months ending June 30 were $3,480,067, an increase of 2 percent over the same period last year.Net income per share was $2.40, compared with $2.34 for the same period last year.Carroll County Bank and Trust Co. operates 11 offices in Carroll County and an office in Ellicott City.

Rogers appointed to Springfield boardGov. Parris Glendening has appointed Ben C. Rogers of Westminster assistant vice president and business development officer of the citizens advisory board of Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville.The board is made up of appointed business leaders and others whose responsibility is to assume leadership in developing community understanding of the needs of those who have mental disorders.Rogers, who joined Carroll County Bank and Trust Co. in 1993, will work directly with the staff and patients of the hospital.

Commission recommends judge's reappointmentThe Trial Courts Judicial Nominating Commission for Carroll County recommended to Gov. Parris N. Glendening last week that Circuit Judge Luke K. Burns Jr. be reappointed to another term in Carroll County Circuit Court.His term officially ended Friday.Judge Burns began serving on the Carroll County Circuit Court in 1979, when he was appointed by Gov. Harry Hughes. He was elected to 15-year term in 1980.Louna S. Primm promoted at Carroll County BankCarroll County Bank and Trust Co. has promoted Louna S. Already reeling from the loss of the downtown post office and Mather's department store, Westminster officials learned yesterday that plans for a $6 million development and 135 new jobs have been canceled as part of a bank merger.The news came with an announcement that Westminster-based Carroll County Bank & Trust Co. would be acquired by BB&T Corp. of Winston, N.C."As of yesterday, 135 new jobs were created. As of today, the world has changed," said Karen Blandford, Westminster's manager of housing and community development.

State police, along with the FBI, members of the Carroll County Drug Task Force and Manchester officers, charged a 37-year-old man with a Fowblesburg bank robbery that took place Thursday.Roger Coleman Caple of the 2000 block of Regal Oak Drive in Manchester was arrested about 8:30 p.m. Thursday as he walked near his house, after a surveillance of several hours by the police team.Officers said they recovered a fake bomb and clothing matching that worn by a man who robbed the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Fowblesburg, Baltimore County, about 4:38 p.m. Thursday.
