Caitlin Dunbar loved the outdoors and was active in Girl Scouts. "We called her our tree-hugger," said her father, Alex Dunbar. "Caitlin was really interested in adventure, excitement, things like that." As a youngster, Caitlin spent as much time as she could at Girl Scout Camp Conowingo, a 600-acre property owned and operated by the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. She attended summer camps there and was particularly enchanted by an oar hanging on the wall in the lodge, signed by previous generations of Girl Scouts, including her mother, Marty Dunbar.

What could be better than word that the shad are running in the Susquehanna River? Word that the Department of Natural Resources and Exelon Generation, the owner of the Conowingo Dam and shoreline below it, have worked out the details to provide greater access to Fisherman's Park on the Harford County side of the river and Octoraro Creek on the Cecil County side. After months of negotiations and discussions with fishing groups, the state and utility have a plan that is likely to please both Homeland Security folks and the federal agency that oversees generating plants.

The Conowingo Dam is a magnet for eagle-watchers. Here, as the waters of the Susquehanna River surge through the gates of the 4,500-foot-long dam, anywhere from a half-dozen to 40 bald eagles can be seen perched on electrical transmission towers, soaring overhead and swooping into the frothing current for a meal. Getting the perfect shot with that digital camera, however, is a little harder. Bob Dorsch of Newark, Del., recently was explaining the nature-themed few days he had in store for grandsons Benjamin Dorsch, 9, and Cameron Dorsch, 6, when an eagle suddenly flew overhead.

PORT DEPOSIT - Waters of the rain-swollen Susquehanna River cascaded through floodgates opened yesterday in the Conowingo Dam, but many residents of this downstream town were not about to budge - despite city officials declaring a state of emergency and "strongly" recommending an evacuation. Some said they couldn't bear to leave behind pets. Others said they wanted to ride out the rising waters with friends, cranking heavy-metal tunes and downing cans of beer. Still others said they had survived past floods, including the devastation that followed what was left of Hurricane Agnes in 1972, and that they would make it through the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.

Access to the Susquehanna River and a significant portion of the Conowingo Dam fishing area will limited for the next two to five months as Colonial Pipeline Co. repairs a pipeline that runs under the river just downstream of the dam, according to a company spokesman. Shures Landing Road and its parking lot already have been closed to house equipment for the project and to serve as a workspace for repairs. Work on the pipeline is scheduled to begin June 16. Company officials say they will accommodate recreational activities if possible.
