The last flu clinic of the year sponsored by Action for Community Enrichment [ACE] will be held between 9 a.m. and noon Wednesday at Waxter Senior Center, 1000 Cathedral St., downtown.ACE has scheduled the flu shots in conjunction with the city Health Department. The threat of flu is at its peak between December and April.The shots are free to anyone 65 years or older who has Medicare "part B" insurance. USF&G Corp. completed its acquisition of Titan Holdings Inc. in a deal valued at $221 million, the company said yesterday.The Baltimore-based insurer will more than double its position in two specialty property and casualty businesses with the acquisition: insuring riskier drivers and insuring small and medium-size towns and counties.The merger was approved yesterday by Titan's shareholders, who met in San Antonio, Texas, where the company is based.Shares of USF&G stock closed at $22.125 yesterday, down 31.25 cents.

Liquor license transferred at Baldwin's RestaurantThe Carroll County Board of License Commissioners has approved a liquor license transfer and request to sell crafts at a roadside stand.The owners of Baldwin's Restaurant in Sykesville requested a vTC transfer of the Class B beer, wine and liquor license from Sarah A. Cullum to the new owner, Stewart A. Dearie.Dearie has had prior restaurant experience, and character witnesses testified on his behalf.Galen and Donna Blubaugh of East Deep Run Road requested a conditional use permit to sell arts and crafts in conjunction with their produce stand.

"Twice Around the Park" has come around again. The pair of one-act comedies by Murray Schisgal tried out for Broadway at the Mechanic Theatre back in 1982. A small-scale look at the battle between the sexes, the show is just the right size for the Spotlighters Theatre, where it is being presented in conjunction with the Columbia Community Players through Oct. 27.The sparring partners in the first act are an actor who has angered his upstairs neighbor, a New York city policewoman, by playing opera recordings too loudly.

Host Marriott Corp. yesterday raised $415 million through a secondary stock offering, capital the Bethesda-based company will use to further its 2-year-old strategy of acquiring upscale hotels.Host Marriott, which has invested $915 million to buy 27 full-service lodging properties since early 1994, now owns 93 projects.The company told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission of its intent to sell the stock in January. Yesterday's sale involved 31.6 million shares at $13.12 per share.Host Marriott, which went public in October 1993 in conjunction with a division of the former Marriott Corp.

Q: Last week my baby's left eye got red. Yellow pus began coming out of it. My mother said she had "pink eye" and it would go away with warm compresses, but the doctor said it was "conjunctivitis" and gave us some drops to put in both eyes.The redness is gone now, but I wonder who was right.A: It sounds to us as though your doctor and mother agreed about the diagnosis. They just used different names for the same condition. Pink eye is a form of conjunctivitis.The conjunctiva is a transparent lining that covers the inside of the eyelid then doubles back to cover the exposed part of the eyeball.
