Portions of Baltimore's dormant City Life Museums property could be reopened as a museum, an urban inn and conference center, a school for youths with learning disabilities, law offices and a beer garden, depending on which ideas the city accepts.City housing officials said yesterday that they received four proposals in response to their request for bids from groups that want to own or lease six properties that were part of the Baltimore City Life Museums, a collection of city-owned attractions that closed in June 1997 because of financial problems.

ANNAPOLIS IS ATTRACTING tourists in droves, if the number of inquiries at the state capital's visitors center at Gotts Court is any indication.The facility has been averaging 600 to 700 visitors a day thissummer. As many as 1,000 people have stopped by the center on several days to pick up brochures, obtain information on local attractions or sign up for a guided tour of the renowned historic district.Many of these visitors are not day-trippers. They are staying overnight and spending more time exploring some of Annapolis' less-obvious sights.

Bethesda-based Marriott International Inc. has agreed to pay $210 million for the Gaylord Hotels brand and hotel management company, Marriott announced Thursday. Gaylord Entertainment Co.'s shareholders must approve the company's conversion to a real estate investment trust before the sale, according to a statement from Marriott. The vote is expected in August and the transaction should close by October, Marriott said. If shareholders approve the conversion, Gaylord will continue to own its existing hotels but Marriott will take over their management under long-term agreements; the initial term will be 35 years, the statement said.

In recent years, commercial property owners have had to dangle new amenities in front of prospective tenants to gain an edge in an increasingly competitive office-space market. It might be parking, a lobby restaurant or a fitness center. For David W. Kornblatt, that something extra is nothing new, because he was one of the first in Baltimore to build a conference center with a spectacular vista for tenants, in his 28-story St. Paul Plaza office tower, in 1989. Kornblatt hopes to take his venture a step further by promoting his meeting rooms with a view to outside groups.

It will be a stylish affair, suitable after an eight-year engagement. Latin bands will play. Crab cakes and martinis will be served. Jubilant officials will snip a festive ribbon. Twelve hundred invitations have been sent out for tomorrow's opening of Montgomery County's new conference center. Everyone is ready to celebrate -- except the one man who made the county wonder if it could ever throw this party. David H. Brown, 78, is a retired federal employee who taught himself case law to challenge the conference center in an extraordinary fight.

The Belmont Conference Center, a historic Elkridge manor house with an 82-acre estate, is for sale, its owner announced yesterday. After being its steward for more than 20 years, the board of directors of the Washington-based American Chemical Society decided to sell the property because Belmont didn't fit the group's plans. "Having a conference center was not really aligned with our strategic mission" of being the premiere provider of chemical information in the world, said the society's executive director and chief executive officer, Madeleine Jacobs.

The city of Annapolis has hired an economic consultant to study the possibility of building a conference center on an abandoned 11-acre lot at West Street and Taylor Avenue.But hiring ZHA of Annapolis to conduct the $30,000 study does not mean there are definite plans to build a conference center, city officials insisted yesterday. It only means they want a comprehensive picture of potential Inner West Street revitalization plans before making any decisions, they said.While proposed street improvements and a traffic circle are elements in the revitalization plan, officials say they are not certain that a convention center is part of the answer.

The Clocktower Centre, a shopping center for which Columbia-based LDR International provided initial market research and retail development strategy, opened recently at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda.Princess Margaret of the United Kingdom participated in the center's official opening.LDR is preparing a feasibility study for a conference center and public function rooms at the dockyard.

The debate over a proposed conference center in Annapolis heated up again last night as both sides argued whether the city should spend more money studying a possible site on West Street.Testifying before the City Council, residents, business people and community leaders alternately labeled the request a boost for a struggling urban corridor and a selfish grab by an affluent hotel industry.The City Council is expected to vote Monday on whether to approve a $140,000 grant request for a new study of the West Street-Taylor Avenue intersection, the potential site for a conference center favored by many local hospitality businesses.

Construction magnate Willard Hackerman has offered to finance and build an 18,500-seat arena in downtown Baltimore, civic leaders say, freeing taxpayers from having to foot the bill and significantly increasing the chances that plans for a $900 million convention center expansion and arena will become a reality. News of Hackerman's offer was made public Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Greater Baltimore Committee, a private business group that has been exploring ways to build an arena that would be combined with an expanded convention center to bolster the city's tourism business and add life to Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
