After tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament in January, the 6-foot-5 Maryland guard limped around campus with his head down and his knee immobilized in a brace. "The feeling of being out struck me hard," he said. "I had never really been injured before. ... The first two weeks, I didn't even want to play basketball anymore. For the first two months I was depressed. I was down on myself, asking, `Why did this happen to me?

When Daniel Harper's 9-year-old son, Daniel Jr., made his first youth football all-star game last year, the younger Harper proudly wore his jersey, but didn't get it very dirty on game day. "They had these kids pay money, they gave them a jersey, and the kids stood on the sideline," said Harper, a strength and conditioning coach at Friends. "His experience last year is what fueled me. " Harper, a Baltimore police officer, last April founded Elite Youth Training LLC, which trains young athletes.

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will not return this winter to the Athletes' Performance facility in Arizona, where he has been doing his offseason workouts since 2002. However, it has nothing to do with the state of the herniated disk in his back. In fact, Roberts said, since returning to the Orioles' lineup in late July after a 3 1/2-month absence, he has had no problems with his back and doesn't expect the injury to significantly affect his offseason workouts. "I will make some adjustments, and part of it will be certainly staying away from some things that could cause me problems, but I don't foresee anything," said Roberts, who will be relocating from Arizona to Sarasota, Fla., this offseason, which is the reason he won't be attending Athletes' Performance.

Running across the middle and catching the pass lofted by quarterback Brian St. Pierre was not new for Clarence Moore. Completing the task during practice, however, was. For the first time since undergoing an operation to repair a sports hernia in May, Moore practiced yesterday afternoon with the rest of his Ravens teammates at the team's training camp at McDaniel College. "It feels like it's about time," said Moore, who was activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list after missing 17 days of camp.

Being that she's 43 years old and has a desk job in the dean's office at the Johns Hopkins University, Helen Montag would be considered a long-shot pro football prospect. But a Friday morning finds her inside a sports gym doing strength, balance and agility drills under the eye of Jon Crosby, a man who has pushed some of the NFL's best players into oxygen debt. A conditioning coach by trade, Crosby has trained running back Eddie George of the Dallas Cowboys, former Raven Shannon Sharpe and current Ravens Kordell Stewart, Ovie Mughelli and Aubrayo Franklin, as well as the U.S. Olympic bobsled team.
