The fight against cancer is a never-ending battle. And it takes a never-ending stream of money to keep it going. Be it large or small, every amount that goes toward the fight is important. When a bunch of bands paraded on stage at Cedar Lane Regional Park last Thursday, it was young people taking up arms in the war against the dreaded disease. The All For One Concert was the brainchild of a couple of brainiacs, whose lives, as so many of ours have been touched by cancer. The theme of the event was to raise money to help achieve a cancer free future.

Pianist Richard Goode, who was scheduled to give a recital in the Candlelight Series at Howard Community College at 3 p.m. Sunday, has canceled because of a sprained wrist. The recital has been re-scheduled for May 19; tickets for this Sunday's canceled concert will be honored at that time.

A Morgan State University concert-goer has filed a lawsuit alleging that she was knocked to the ground and trampled last year when a large amount of cash was thrown into the crowd during a performance by rapper Lil' Wayne. Tyrique Layne, a student at Morgan at the time, filed the lawsuit yesterday in Baltimore Circuit Court, claiming that she required overnight hospitalization as a result of injuries she suffered last October at the concert held at the university. In addition to Lil' Wayne, whose given name is Dwayne Michael Carter, the suit names Universal Records Inc., Cash Money Records Inc. and Young Money Touring Inc. Stacey Richman, an attorney who has represented Lil' Wayne in another matter, said she did not have any information on the lawsuit and could not comment.

The economic Grinch has claimed another victim.The Bach Meistersingers' Christmas Concert, which was scheduled for Dec. 15 at St. Anne's Church, has been canceled.Explained the group's spokesman, Val Hymes: "We can't afford the big chamber orchestras. Our first concert 10 years ago cost $600, andthe one last year cost $3,600. So if we do any concerts in future, we'll use a harpsichord, and maybe two or three other instruments."Group president Olive Moochler explained in a letter to supporters that "Costs have increased, support has dried up, and grants have beenfrozen or cut. We need to regroup and refocus our musical resources.

MEXICO CITY -- A popular singer, his manager and his driver were gunned down in an ambush after a concert in the border city of Reynosa in an apparent gangland killing yesterday as drug-related violence continued across Mexico. The singer, 27-year-old Valentin Elizalde, was killed about 20 minutes after performing at a local fair. According to news reports, gunmen in two vehicles chased Elizalde's black sport utility vehicle as he left the concert, then opened fire with automatic weapons as dozens of witnesses looked on. According to news reports, Elizalde was hit as many as eight times.

A Virginia man is accusing security guards at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia of beating and kicking him after he sneaked onto the property without a ticket during a concert last August.Nathan Crouch of Arlington is suing Rouse Co., which owns the Merriweather property in Columbia, and the company that manages the facility.A Rouse official declined to comment yesterday. An official with Merriweather said company officials will look into the matter.Jean Parker, Merriweather's general manager, said, "We'll take the appropriate measures to investigate the incident."

The eighth annual Western Maryland College Summer Band Camp Concert, featuring 75 middle and high school student musicians from schools across Maryland, will be held in the college's Decker College Center Forum at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.The concert, which will include several contemporary selections and an audience participation number, is free and open to the public.At 7 p.m. Friday in the Forum, band campers and staff members will present a talent show including comedy skits and music. Like the concert, it is free and open to the public.
