Joe and Elana Byrd chose the snug back room of 49 West Coffeehouse and Cafe to hold last weekend's tribute concert to Jim Lester, a longtime Annapolis musician who enjoyed playing there. Lester died April 27 in Hingham, Mass., from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) at age 82. The warm ambience and intimate listening space were ideal for the concert, which featured Lester's musician friends Robert Redd on piano, John Jenson on trombone and Brooks Tegler on drums, along with vocalist Sue Matthews and guest trumpeter Dick Glass.

As Katy Perry sang raunchy songs and simulated sex acts on the Merriweather stage, she had some pipsqueaks in her audience, including Howard County Executive Ken Ulman's two little girls. "There were moments when my wife [Jaki] and I looked at each other and hoped that the girls didn’t comprehend the lyrics," Ulman said. "But it was a great show and they were into it, dancing the whole time. It was like one big Candy Land party. " Ulman said the concert was a little like "Madagascar" and other kids' movies that have jokes only grown-ups can grasp.

As far as album sales are concerned, Bob Seger certainly has seen better days. His current album, "It's a Mystery," was released late last year to lukewarm sales and even more tepid reviews. But when it comes to the concert side of things, Seger is nothing if not dependable. It was his live show, after all, that built his reputation in the first place, as anyone familiar with the classic "Live Bullet" album knows, and even though some 20 years have passed since then, there's every reason to believe he'll deliver that old time rock and roll with equal fervor today.
