Marilyn L. Colson, an educational counselor who shepherded high school students through the ordeal of gaining college admission, died Wednesday of lung cancer at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. She was 72 and lived in Pikesville. A former Park School mathematics teacher, she opened her educational consulting practice in 1983 to guide students through the hurdles - and paperwork - of getting into a school she thought would fit them. She also placed middle and high school students in boarding schools and often advised the families of children with learning disabilities.

A police officer for the city's Housing Authority pleaded guilty yesterday to assaulting his estranged wife and attempting to murder her boyfriend in January when he shot the man twice.David A. Colson, 29, of the 500 block of N. Decker Ave. in Baltimore was on probation from a previous assault on his wife when he broke into her White Marsh home Jan. 24.He shot Aziz T. Bello and held Alison Colson, the estranged wife, at gunpoint while he ordered her to undress, according to Baltimore County Assistant State's Attorney Stephen Bailey.

Four-year-old Michael Colson clutched the straps of his bright green backpack yesterday, proudly modeled it for his mother and vowed he would never take it off. "He will probably sleep in it, he likes it so much," Chrystal Colson said of her youngest son, who will be a newcomer in the fall to the Head Start program in Westminster. At an annual back-to-school giveaway at a county charity, Colson and her four children, ages 4 to 10, went shopping. Shepherd's Staff, an ecumenical ministry to Carroll County's needy families, promised each child a backpack filled with school supplies and certificates for new shoes and a haircut, with whatever gently used clothing they wanted from the organization's closets.
