Those darned patriarchal Christians are at it again. With "purity balls" back in the news - dress-up affairs during which fathers and daughters profess their allegiance to sexual purity - evangelicals once again have become America's favorite whipping boys. Are these guys weird, or what? Well, yes, a little. But then again, not really. Purity balls are an inevitable offspring of a permissive culture that at times seems more predatory than liberating. The dads and daughters who "date," dance and exchange purity oaths are merely a reactionary response.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two key interests consumed Marianne Elser Crowder as a girl: dancing and Girl Scouts. Dancing became her passion and her career. Scouting taught her lifelong skills and created lasting friendships. Crowder, 100, the nation's oldest living Girl Scout, was the guest of honor recently at the Girl Scouts-Wagon Wheel Council's annual Women of Distinction luncheon. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native joined the Council's Troop 4 in 1918. That was just one year after the council, one of the oldest west of the Mississippi River, began.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Make no mistake, Kimmie Meissner would rather be skating an exhibition tonight than sitting in some fancy restaurant or indulging in a rare chocolate treat. Being on the ice means she finished in the top four this afternoon at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. Being elsewhere means she did not. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The thin air and sparse crowd seemed to take the wind out of Kimmie Meissner's sails during her short program last night at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. The reigning world and national champion found herself in sixth place after an underwhelming performance that began with a fall on the front end of a triple-triple jump combination and wobbled into her least favorite spin -- the layback. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The primary objective for the top U.S. skaters at Four Continents Figure Skating Championships is to get through two injury-free performances. There is nothing at stake here and little to gain except for more competitive ice time before the World Championships in Tokyo next month. That was brought home yesterday during the pairs long program, when Canadian champion Jessica Dube was struck under the left eye by the blade of her partner Bryce Davison during side-by-side flying camel spins.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- It stands to reason that Kimmie Meissner's unconventional rise to the top of women's figure skating might include some unplanned stops. After winning the U.S. title two weeks ago, the Bel Air teen said she didn't know if she would perform at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, a competition that has attracted few of the top American women skaters since its start in 1999.
