Very little has gone right this season for Oakland (21-30), which enters Friday's series opener with the Orioles mired in last place in the American League West, mostly because of a punchless offense. Heading into Thursday, the A's ranked last in the AL in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage, extra-base hits and batting average with runners in scoring position. Outfielder Matt Holliday, acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies before the season, is starting to heat up, going 8-for-19 with three doubles, a homer and five RBIs in his past five games.

The Orioles optioned outfielder and designated hitter Henry Urrutia to Triple-A Norfolk following Friday night's 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Manager Buck Showalter said after the game the Orioles will probably bring up a bullpen arm because of right-hander Francisco Rodriguez's strained right groin. Urrutia had a .269/.269/.308 slash line and two RBIs in 21 games. The Cuban defector had only one extra-base hit - a triple in his sixth game at Kansas City - and no walks to go with nine strikeouts.

After giving up a home run and a single to the first two batters in the eighth inning, right-hander Francisco Rodriguez exited Friday's loss to the Colorado Rockies with a strained right groin. He said after the game the soreness bothered him the past week, but it was worse against the Rockies. Similar soreness bothered Rodriguez in 2011, but he plans to keep pitching after treatment Saturday. Manager Buck Showalter said he thinks Rodriguez wanted to catch the soreness early before it got worse.
