College Students

Alexander Pendleton, of Laurel, was named to the honor roll for the fall semester at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence. A senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, he is the son of Michael and Vibeke Pendleton, of Laurel. Christine Baumgarten and Roberta Goldenpenny, both residents of Laurel, were named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Notre Dame of Maryland University, in Baltimore. Mital Patel, of Laurel, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at University of the Science, in Philadelphia, Pa. She is a pharmacology and toxicology student.

Harford Community College is pleased to announce those students named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester. Students on the list have achieved high academic honor. In qualifying for the dean's list, a student must receive all As and Bs grades and have a 3.50 to 3.75 GPA (grade point average). Full-time students must have completed 12 credit hours during the semester. Part-time students are eligible after having completed 12 credit hours and then completing six credit hours during the current semester.

Jimmy Patsos got what he wanted after all. "Three games in March," he said Sunday after Loyola beat Manhattan, 63-61, at Reitz Arena. Three games to win the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and get the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. All he wanted was a shot at it. He doesn't ask for the sky, the moon and the stars above. But now Loyola, the little Catholic school at the corner of Charles St. and Cold Spring Lane, gets a chance to win three games in March and go to the Big Dance.

Movie tickets at the Northwood Theatre cost just 90 cents back in 1963. But for some, the price of admission was considerably higher. It took years of picketing and nights in jail for hundreds of African-American college students and their supporters before the theater in the Hillen neighborhood of Baltimore dropped its whites-only policy. Fifty years ago this week, the matinee of the Disney movie "In Search of the Castaways" played to the Northwood's first-ever integrated audience.

More than 100 people crowded into an intimate memorial service Saturday morning for Stephen Alex Rane, a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park who police say was killed Tuesday by his housemate. "We've witnessed a horrific tragedy this week," said the Rev. Jim Moyer, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church outside Philadelphia. During the 40-minute service, mourners made little other mention of the circumstances of Rane's death. Instead, family and friends took the solemn occasion to share thoughts about how, over his 22 years, the gregarious young man brought them joy, taught them life lessons and stood by them.

There is still much we do not know about Dayvon Green, the University of Maryland, College Park student who police say fatally shot one of his roommates, Stephen Alex Rane, and seriously wounded another outside their off-campus apartment before taking his own life on Tuesday. Mr. Green, a promising graduate engineering student from the Baltimore area, reportedly was under treatment for mental illness, and though the precise nature of his condition has not been confirmed, investigators believe it may have been a factor in this horrible crime.

From Liz Atwood: I can't believe I've come to the point where I actually would like to see the kids wasting their time playing video games.  What has driven me to this drastic change? Lately the kids have taken to wasting their time texting friends and posting pictures on Instagram and Twitter. Their new preoccupation with social media sets up a whole new challenge. In the past, I only needed to look at the rating on a game box to get a sense of whether the content was inappropriate.

Anne Arundel Community College students Marcelle Lee of Severna Park and Dustin Shirley of Odenton had never taken a digital forensics course at the school until this past summer, but they are fast learners. The duo recently won the community college division of the U.S. Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) Digital Forensic Challenge, a competition that challenges students to analyze digital clues related to cybersecurity and counterterrorism. The win marked the second consecutive academic year that a team from Anne Arundel Community College has won the international competition.
