The Tewaaraton Foundation has named former Johns Hopkins lacrosse star and U.S. Lacrosse National Hall of Famer Joe Cowan as the recipient of the third annual Tewaaraton Legends Award. "Joe Cowan is a natural selection for the third Tewaaraton Legends Award," said Jeff Harvey, chairman of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “He was an outstanding player during a championship era at Johns Hopkins and, just as importantly, he has always been loyal to his alma mater and the game of lacrosse.” Cowan's illustrious lacrosse career began at Friends, where he was a standout midfielder.

Media Sun's Preston named top Md. sportswriter The Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston has been honored as the Maryland Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association for the second straight year, it was announced Thursday. Preston, who has covered the Ravens since the franchise came to Baltimore in 1996, first as a beat reporter and then as a columnist, has worked for The Sun since 1983. He is a native of Essex and a graduate of Towson State, where he played football.

There's only a month to go until the start of the most anticipated college lacrosse season, well, ever. Why the excitement? There's the return of Cornell attackman Rob Pannell, the 2011 USILA National Player of the Year, who missed most of last season with a broken foot, but really what will make 2013 different is that the game itself will be different -- much different. Sweeping rules changes , including the adoption of a shot clock for the first time, have been crafted to make the "fastest game on two feet" even faster.

Colleges Ex-UMBC standout Chase transfers to George Washington Lauren Chase , the 2011-12 America East Rookie of the Year who announced her decision to leave UMBC after eight games this season, has transferred to George Washington and will be eligible to play after the fall 2013 semester. Chase, a 5-foot-5 point guard, averaged 8.4 points and 4.6 assists last season, leading the conference in assists, and she helped lead the Retrievers to the 2012 America East title game for just the second time in school history.

Pro lacrosse Knighthawks deal ex-Jay Rabil to Wings The Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League on Friday acquired former Johns Hopkins All-American Paul Rabil from the Rochester Knighthawks as part of a blockbuster six-player trade that sends Wings forward Dan Dawson and defenseman Paul Dawson to the Knighthawks. For Rabil, the trade is the third in less than a year. In August, the Edmonton Rush dealt Rabil to the Knighthawks after Rabil refused to play for Edmonton and declared his desire to be with an Eastern team.

College lacrosse Boys' Latin's Heacock to play for Maryland Boys' Latin senior attackman-midfielder Colin Heacock , ranked the No. 20 recruit in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, has committed orally to Maryland. Heacock was a longtime Penn State recruit before decommitting in early November. He visited and was in discussions with multiple schools before deciding on the Terps. Heacock's addition to Maryland's Class of 2013 gives it another player ranked in the Top 50, including three other Top 50 attackmen in Matt Rambo (No. 1)

College football Navy LB Wetzel chosen as FBS Independent Player of the Week Navy senior linebacker Keegan Wetzel was named Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Player of the Week for games played Nov. 24 to Dec. 8. Wetzel set a career high with 11 tackles Saturday, including 1.5 tackles for loss, helping the Midshipmen to a 17-13 win over Army at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to clinch the Commander in Chief's Trophy....

College football Hopkins, Salisbury players earn D3football.com honors Five Johns Hopkins players were chosen to the D3football.com All-South Region team: Junior offensive tackle Armand Jenifer received first-team honors, while senior linebacker Taylor Maciow and senior running back Jonathan Rigaud earned second-team accolades. Junior wide receiver Dan Wodicka and junior center Ben Cranston (Loyola) were selected to the third team. Blue Jays junior linebacker John Arena and junior offensive lineman Vincenzo Bonaddio were named to the CoSIDA/Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-America team.

College football San Jose St. to play in Military Bowl at RFK San Jose State, fresh off its first 10-win season since 1987, has agreed to play in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 at RFK Stadium, bowl organizers announced Friday. The Spartans, who received the 26th-most votes in the most recent Associated Press poll, will play a team to be determined after this weekend's games are completed. It will be San Jose State's second trip to the Washington area this season. On Sept. 29, the Spartans defeated Navy, 12-0, in Annapolis.

College football Towson's West receives FCS 3rd-team honor Towson sophomore running back Terrance West (Northwestern) has been named as a third-team All-American by College Sports Madness, a website that covers the Football Championship Subdivision. The leading rusher in the Colonial Athletic Association, West carried 195 times for 1,046 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns. He caught five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Et cetera Stevenson gets D-II, D-III women's lax championships The NCAA Division II and III women's lacrosse committees have selected Stevenson as the new host of the 2013 Division II and Division III championships after they were moved from Montclair State (N.J.)
