Q. My aunt heard that cod liver oil is good for arthritis and has started taking it twice a day to ease her aches and pains. I worry about this since she doesn't always use common sense. Is there any danger?A. A recent study from Sweden shows this could be a problem. Researchers found that women who got too much vitamin A in their diets had weaker bones and were more susceptible to hip fracture. When I was in Europe last month, I caught a cold and developed an awful cough. Luckily, a German pharmacist understood my sign language and sold me a miracle cure that cleared it up in a few days. The medicine is Makatussin, and it contains "Thymianfluid-extrakt" and "Sternanisol." It comes as drops to be put on a sugar cube or in tea. It worked so much better than my regular cough medicine that I would like to find something similar here. Is there a medicine like it? Makatussin contains extract of thyme and star anise oil. The German government has approved both herbs for colds and coughs.

Q. My father drinks one or two glasses of red wine daily. He insists it is his "medicine," keeping his heart and brain healthy. It has become a family joke, especially because he insists that it has to be good wine. We asked him where he got this idea, and he cited your newspaper column. Is Dad's "medicine" really as good for him as he says, or is this just an excuse? A. Scientific studies document the value of moderate wine consumption in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's and heart disease.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the Orioles, an 11-8 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night was like a heavy dose of cod liver oil. Their six-game losing streak was cured, but boy, was the aftertaste bitter. The Orioles slugged five homers and accumulated a season-high 18 hits, and yet they barely hung on to win. Starting pitcher Kent Mercker did almost everything possible to lose, blowing one lead of four runs and nearly blowing another, and in the bottom of the ninth Kansas City had the bases loaded with the potential winning run at the plate.

I was prescribed Advair for asthma. It worked well for my breathing problem, but my skin became thin, and I started bruising badly. Then I experienced horrible damage to my skin, with deep gashes from a slight bump. One day, I leaned on the bathroom counter, and several inches of the skin on my arm peeled off. My lung specialist insisted Advair was not responsible for thinning skin. My pharmacist said it could be from steroids. She checked my meds and told me Advair contains a steroid. My doctor still said it was not the medication.

There comes a point in the career of every mid-level rock band when the devices that galvanized crowds no longer resonate consistently, and a step in some wild direction is needed -- if for no other reason than to re-energize coasting musicians. That's the crossroads where the York, Pa., quartet known as Live is living, six albums into a spotty, sometimes brilliant run. The band's response, Birds of Pray, is telling: It stays put. For all the spiritual questing that lards Live's lyrics, when it came time to tear out for new horizons, this outfit chose to offer variations on the righteous babble that has dominated its output since the breakthrough second album, The Distance to Here (1999)

Population strains most basic resource The Sun's thorough coverage of the outlook for Maryland's water needs gave readers an extremely serious warning about the prospect that we could run out of our most important natural resource because of the sheer number of people here ("Running dry?" Feb. 5). State Sen. Roy P. Dyson showed his awareness of the approaching disaster when he said, "The way we're going now is not working. Some day we'll wake up and say, `Oh, my God, where are we going to get our water?

Q. I read in your column about the use of coconut milk and coconut macaroon cookies to stop diarrhea. As a physician, I find this recommendation irresponsible. This practice could be dangerous or even deadly for some people. Coconut is almost always preserved with sulfites to retain its color and freshness. Many people are allergic to sulfites, and some experience life-threatening asthma after ingesting them. A. It is certainly true that many packaged foods may contain sulfite preservatives.

GIVE MICHAEL PACE credit. The Anne Arundel County school board member's idea of creating special taxation districts to generate more money for education suffers from some fundamental flaws, but he raises an interesting question: How long can Anne Arundel, given its existing tax cap, maintain the quality of its school system and provide other essential services?Mr. Pace's intent is noble. He wants to develop a palatable method of raising more money for education. In his plan, the county would be broken into smaller units, such as councilmanic districts.
