Coach Mike Krzyzewski's big accomplishment this year was leading Duke to a second consecutive NCAA championship. His fans can collect his card (NBA Hoops No. 588), but be advised that it was issued because he's an assistant coach -- of the U.S. men's Olympic team. Seton Hall's P. J. Carlesimo, the other assistant coach, also has a card.

DURHAM, N.C. -- It was a night for dreamers in Cameron Indoor Stadium but it looked, at times, like a scene from a Bill Murray movie. The Duke Blue Devils, the reigning kings of college basketball, held open tryouts yesterday for one spot on their roster.Participants were required only to be male, enrolled at Duke and confident or imaginative enough to believe they belonged on the court with Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley. There were 38 players who answered coach Mike Krzyzewski's call to try out. A few were good enough to get a serious look.

With the school's longest losing streak in nearly 50 years still intact, the Duke basketball team yesterday lost something more than a game: The Blue Devils won't have coach Mike Krzyzewski for the remainder of the season. After he missed the past two weeks because of complications from back surgery last October, it was announced that Krzyzewski would not return until the start of practice for the 1995-96 season. The announcement comes as the Blue Devils, the country's most dominant college team the past decade, are 9-8 overall and 0-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time in league history.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said yesterday that he is exploring the possibility of leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference school after 14 years for an NBA job.In confirming a report in yesterday's Durham, N.C., Herald-Sun, Krzyzewski said his decision to consider another coaching job has nothing to do with his team's recent academic problems. In a brief statement released by the school's sports information office, Krzyzewski said: "I am looking at other coaching opportunities; however, this activity is not based on any poor performances by my players academically."

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference has enjoyed more serene men's basketball off-seasons.The ACC has suffered some public relations blows since last season, when Duke lost in the NCAA final, making it six straight years without a national championship for the land's proudest league.North Carolina is the media favorite to win regular-season honors in the ACC for the first time since 1993, when the Tar Heels were the conference's last NCAA champion. On Tobacco Road, however, they are bemoaning several losses: prime recruit Jason Parker to academic deficiencies; assistant coach Phil Ford temporarily to a drinking problem; and tradition, as Michael Jordan has bestowed the Tar Heels with a new uniform design.
