A top official at the state Injured Workers' Insurance Fund is out of a job, and health care providers are protesting actions by the fund that have delayed and slashed their reimbursements. Employees at IWIF, the state's largest workers compensation carrier, learned late last week that Thomas W. Cleary, vice president and chief operating officer of the fund, was gone. Announcement of his departure came in a terse internal e-mail message to employees from Thomas L. Bromwell, IWIF president and chief executive officer.

Chanon Watson scored a career-high 24 points, leading host Goucher (13-10, 6-6) to a 71-53 victory over Catholic in a Capital Athletic Conference women's game yesterday.Watson, a freshman guard, also had seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Di Di Cotton added 15 points and six rebounds for Goucher.Catholic (7-16, 3-9), which lost to St. Mary's on Saturday, 67-64, was led by Martha Cleary with 15 points and Liz Cleary with 14.

Russell G. Cleary, 63, who built G. Heileman Brewing Co. into one of the largest breweries in the country, died Thursday in La Crosse, Wis., of complications from heart surgery. Cleary, the chairman of the Wisconsin company from 1971 to 1989, had a reputation as a tough maverick who aggressively expanded it with the purchase of smaller breweries -- including Carling National and its Halethorpe plant along the Baltimore Beltway -- and diversification.Heileman became the target of a takeover as its market share shrank and profits faltered.

On Tuesday, June 20, formerly of Baltimore, at his daughter's residence in Walkersville, MD surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Shirley Ritterpusch Cleary, who died in 1988. Born June 13, 1927 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Mary Katherine O'Connell Cleary. Mr. Cleary was a graduate of Calvert Hall College and attended Johns Hopkins University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was the comptroller of Franklin Square Hospital from 1954 to 1969 and ended his career when he retired as Senior Accounting Officer of Mercantile Bank in 1990.

The Subject Was Roses is about a soldier returning home from war, but it's his parents who are dealing with trauma. The timeliness of the issue of young military men readjusting to home life may be one reason behind this revival of Frank D. Gilroy's 1965 Pulitzer Prize-winning play. As is evident from director Leonard Foglia's production at Washington's Kennedy Center, however, the play is primarily an old-fashioned domestic drama, not a commentary on war and its aftermath. When Timmy Cleary comes back to his parents' Bronx apartment, he finds himself in the midst of a battle far more difficult to comprehend than those he fought in World War II. "When I left this house three years ago, I blamed him for everything that was wrong here," Timmy says tells his mother near the end of the play.

Tracy McCleary, a saxophonist who led the house band in Baltimore's principal black theater and accompanied Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole during a musical career that spanned six decades, died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at St. Agnes HealthCare. The Edmondson Village resident was 89. From 1948 to 1966, Mr. McCleary led his 12-man group, Tracy McCleary and His Royal Men of Rhythm, seven days a week, four shows a day at the old Royal Theater in the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Ave. in the heart of the city's African-American entertainment and business district.
