MIDDLETOWN, Del. - Across from the Rev. Carol J. Gallagher's office at St. Anne's Episcopal Church here is a room full of small portraits of the priests who have served the 297-year-old parish. Last month, she was elected suffragan, or auxiliary, bishop in the church's Diocese of Southern Virginia. She will be the first Native American woman to become a bishop in a major Christian church.

As the autumn leaves drifted lazily to the ground outside Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Clarksville, 35 pastors and ministry leaders representing various Christian denominations focused on vitality and unity. The event, called Renovare, attracted church leaders from Howard and Anne Arundel counties and Virginia who were intent on learning how they, as the Christian church, could become one voice. The congregation and leadership of Mountain Christian Church have been exceedingly generous with Anna's House of their time, talent and treasure. Anna's House was recently selected as one of the beneficiaries of the Christmas Eve service special offering and received $12,000 earmarked specifically for client assistance funding to help homeless women and their children reach self-sufficiency. These funds will pay for things not traditionally covered by existing grants such as help with car repairs for clients so they can obtain and maintain employment, camp scholarships and special recreation opportunities for the children, as well as a variety of other individualized needs that arise throughout the year, Torri Dietrich, director of Anna's House, said.

The ultimatum by the Obama Administration's Department of Health and Human Services to Christian church groups (and by implication Christian medical personal) to abandon their faith exposes further its increasingly totalitarian pagan character ("Fight over birth control," Jan. 26). This state-against-the-church conflict increasingly resembles aspects of German church history of the 1930s. Until 1934, most German churches supported Chancellor Adolf Hitler'spromise to restore Germany'seconomy and honor.

They installed an elaborate white marble altar, with a life-size statue of the church's patron saint towering over it, and placed intricately carved angels at the sides of the tabernacle. Now those angels are gone, donated to All Saints parish in Liberty Heights.

Your August 22nd editorial lamenting the significant percentage numbers of Americans who believe Barak Obama is Muslim as nothing but conspiracy theory due to Internet-fueled rumor ("Our secret Muslim president") ignores the basis of why many may hold such beliefs. While I don't believe or disbelieve any particular religious affiliation of Barack Obama, your professed belief that he is a Christian is clearly premised upon Mr. Obama claiming to be so. Yet the only Christian church he has ever been a member of is Trinity United Church of Christ with the race baiting, American hating Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. as his beloved pastor.
