Ethel M. Folkemer, an artist and die-hard Orioles fan, died July 17 of heart failure at Morningside House, an Ellicott City assisted-living facility. She was 99. The daughter of a Moore-McCormack Steamship Co. worker and a homemaker, the former Ethel Marie Tillery was born in Baltimore and raised near Latrobe Park. She was a 1930 graduate of Eastern High School and worked as a secretary before marrying Paul L. Folkemer, owner of Folkemer Photo Service, in 1939. The former Linthicum resident, who worked in a variety of mediums including pastels, oils, watercolors and pen and ink, enjoyed painting landscapes and still lifes.

John F. "Jack" Silber, who managed plants for McCormick & Co. and local printing companies, died of progressive supranuclear palsy Tuesday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The South Baltimore resident was 80. Born and raised in South Baltimore, Mr. Silber graduated from Southern High School in 1945. After serving about a year in the Navy, Mr. Silber attended Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, where he wrestled and played football. He earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts.
