Linebacker Ray Lewis' short night led to a productive one for his backups. Lewis did a three-and-out as the first-team defense did not allow a first down on the opening possession of last night's scrimmage at Bair Stadium. With Lewis gone, Bart Scott and Chris Brown had the defensive plays of the night. Scott planted tight end John Jones after a 3-yard gain on the offense's second possession - the hardest hit of training camp so far - and Brown dragged down Chester Taylor for a 5-yard loss on the opening play of the second half.

Karen Theimer was in graduate school at the University of Delaware when a fellow student, from China, said he wanted to introduce her "to an American man so handsome that I would marry him if I was an American woman." So Karen and matchmaker Sheng Ji sat down to a dinner of sake and Chinese dumplings with Chris Brown. Chris was earning his doctorate in computer science at the university. Karen was getting her master's degree in historic preservation. Chris had met Sheng Ji when they both lived in the same student housing.

Even with goaltender Chris Brown shouldering the load, the Anne Arundel Community College men's lacrosse team couldn't head off Herkimer County (N.Y.) Community College from claiming its third straight national title yesterday. After playing to an 8-8 tie in the first half, the visiting Generals scored 11 second-half goals en route to a 19-13 victory in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association championship game at Anne Arundel's Siegert Field. It was a lot of weight to put on one man's shoulders, but Anne Arundel coach Buddy Beardmore was just being honest when asked before the game what his team had to do to overcome top-seeded Herkimer.
