NEW YORK -- Ask Derek Jeter who's been the Yankees' MVP this season and he'll say third baseman Scott Brosius. Ask who leads the club in RBIs during the playoffs and the answer will be the same.Brosius ran his total to 10 in the first inning last night, grounding a single into left field to bring home Chili Davis for a 3-0 lead. He continues to distance himself from last season, when he hit .203 for Oakland and was dealt for pitcher Kenny Rogers in a transaction that didn't raise goosebumps among the Yankees' faithful.

BOSTON -- Shutouts, not records, were on Scott Erickson's mind last night.Erickson stretched his scoreless streak to 30 innings -- matching Frank Viola's Minnesota record -- before tiring in the ninth inning as the Twins beat the Boston Red Sox, 9-3.Erickson (4-2) beat Seattle, 6-0, on April 26 and Boston, 1-0, last Wednesday. He pitched eight scoreless innings before allowing a three-run homer in the ninth to Tom Brunansky, his fifth home run of the season."I was hoping he'd miss it, but he didn't," said Erickson, who knew the pitch was a mistake as soon as he released it. "A fastball that didn't run," Erickson called it.Viola set the club record in 1988.

LOS ANGELES - The fingertip found in a bowl of chili came from a man who lost it in an industrial accident in December and gave it to the husband of the woman who claimed she found it at Wendy's, San Jose, Calif., police announced yesterday. "The truth is beginning to be exposed," said San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis. Davis said tests have confirmed that the finger came from a friend of Anna Ayala's husband. "It was determined he had lost a portion of his finger in an industrial accident last year and that he is an associate of Jaime Plascencia, the husband of Anna Ayala, the woman who claimed to have found a finger in a bowl of Wendy's chili," Davis said yesterday.
