Capitals Blackhawks named Winter Classic foe; Baltimore unlikely as site The Washington Capitals will host the Chicago Blackhawks for the Winter Classic on New Year's Day 2015, an individual with knowledge of the situation said Friday. The first interconference Winter Classic will be Washington's second appearance in the event; the Capitals defeated the host Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011. Although a site has not been named, Nationals Park is the overwhelming front-runner, according to sources.

Et cetera Langhorne's 27 points not enough for Mystics Crystal Langhorne (Maryland) scored a game-high 27 points, but the host Washington Mystics lost to the Phoenix Mercury, 101-97, on Thursday at Verizon Center . Langhorne shot 12-for-13 from the field for Washington, which dropped its fourth straight game. Monique Currie and Matee Ajavon each scored 17 points in the setback. Phoenix's Diana Taurasi had 26 points, and Candice Dupree added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

CHICAGO -- Jeremy Roenick scored a power-play goal and assisted on another last night, lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-1 triumph over the St. Louis Blues.The Blackhawks, extending their unbeaten string to four games (3-0-1), took over first place from idle Detroit in the NHL's Norris Division by a point.With Ed Belfour stopping 21 shots and winning for the fourth time since ending his holdout, the Blackhawks were able to win for the second time (2-3-4) against a Norris Division opponent.

The unannounced reason the Bandits lost big-league forward Valeri Karpov to one of Anaheim's other minor-league affiliates (the Los Angeles Ice Dogs of the IHL) is they wouldn't chip in on his salary.Jon Schwartz, who was the Bandits' PR guy since the team's inception a year and a half ago, is gone, "to seek other opportunities," according to the club .Eric Manlow, the center on loan to the Bandits from Columbus of the ECHL, was a second-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks (50th overall)

CHICAGO -- Four-time All-Star Jeremy Roenick, who has left the Chicago Blackhawks and might be headed for the Phoenix Coyotes, is flying to Washington today to talk contract with the Capitals.Roenick, 26, who used to play youth hockey in Columbia, Md., is so interested in the Capitals that the free-agent center told a friend he probably is going to sign a deal to play with them."I wouldn't be surprised if the Capitals make an offer that will blow this whole thing out of the water," Roenick said.
