All it took was five minutes for Mount St. Mary's to demonstrate why it had settled into last place in the Northeast Conference and threatened to become only the eighth team under coach Jim Phelan to post a losing record. There were turnovers and bad shots, failures to box out and secure rebounds. The points were slow in coming, and the issue looked as if it would be decided quickly. But with many of their fans heading for the exits in the second half, the Mountaineers staged a furious comeback against the team picked to win the league title, using their defensive intensity and clutch shooting to rally from 16 down and defeat Monmouth, 61-59, before 2,250 at Knott Arena.

"In the Mood for Love" is all about mood, and not one bit about action - which explains why it's at once both the most passionate film of the year so far, and the most determinedly inert. Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung) are two unremarkable characters in the overpopulated maelstrom that is 1962 Hong Kong. He's a journalist who's rapidly losing interest in his job; she's secretary to the head of a shipping company. Other than being married to workaholics who are never home, the only thing they share is a common address: a cramped apartment building run by the grandmotherly Mrs. Suen (Rebecca Pan)

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- At halftime yesterday, the situation couldn't have looked much grimmer for Mount St. Mary's.Rider's defense had been overwhelming, the Mountaineers had scored 16 points on 6-for-27 shooting to trail by 13 and their bench was depleted by injuries. Moreover, the Mount was playing a team that never had lost in eight Northeast Conference tournament games, was considered the most talented in the league and had the 1,650 fans in Alumni Gymnasium in a frenzy.L But the metamorphosis of the Mountaineers had not yet begun.

Set in a mythic time and place, filled with glory and daring and action aplenty, Hero is a grand and exhilarating epic, a moviegoing experience of the first order. That its central figures are Chinese and that they speak Mandarin may keep some people away, but that's their loss. Set in pre-China China, when the seven warring states had yet to unite under a common leader, Hero glorifies a warrior who thinks equally with his head and his heart, and asks us to consider the benefits of such a balance, how rare and wonderful it is. It's also a rousing battle flick, filled with flaming arrows and martial arts mastery and swordsmen who can cut with the best of them.
