Consumer Reports has shared some tips for avoiding unnecessary fees when getting cash while traveling abroad. Everyone should definitely inform their credit card issuer and banks if they plan to travel overseas so they don't unnecessarily put a hold on their accounts. And CR also recommends using bank ATMs to withdraw cash for the best exchange rates. They suggest several credit cards that don't charge foreign transaction fees --- penalties for converting other currencies into dollars.

Michelle's posts about how many major airlines have raised their prices after the FAA stopped collecting airfare taxes just makes my blood boil. But that information offers a good reminder that monitoring the price of tickets can pay off, even after they have been purchased. Some airlines will refund or offer credits toward future purchases if a fare decreases in price after you buy it --- even if it is technically a 'nonrefundable' fare. Via Consumerist , I found a list on Airfarewatchdog.com of the airlines that do, including the change fees they charge and the form of the refund.

Liquidation of Borders stores could begin Friday , but shoppers should keep some things in mind before going crazy. Definitely, if you've been hanging on to some gift cards to either Borders or Waldenbooks, better use them up right away. And although we always love a bargain, remember that the savings may not actually be that spectacular. Consumer Reports investigations of sales after Circuit City closed found products were cheaper elsewhere. If you have a smart phone, consider downloading a price comparison app so you can scan bar codes of books and other items to see how prices elsewhere on the same item stack up. One last thing: if you own a Kobo ereader that you purchased from Borders, be sure to transfer your Borders library to a Kobo eBook library asap . Borders sent out an email Wednesday that offered a sweepstakes promotion to motivate folks to take that step.

Here are a couple of ways to save some cash over the long Independence Day holiday weekend, in honor of Cheap Trick Thursday: Get a free game each day at Brunswick Zone bowling alleys in Columbia, Ellicott City and Perry Hall from July 1 through July 4. (via Atlanta Bargain Hunter ) ParticipatingBurger King locations will sell its Original Chicken Sandwich for what has been described as a "patriotic" price of $1.04 on July 2, July 3 and July 4. (I'm not certain why $1.04 is patriotic, but as editor Justine points out, it's a better deal than if they were charging, say, $17.76.)

How do you feel about cinema al fresco? Do you love to recline in a beach chair or on a blanket with a picnic in the warm summer air to watch a film, or do you, like this Slate writer , prefer the quiet, enclosed, soundproofed (and airconditioned) viewing experience -- and comfortable seating -- provided by traditional theaters? I'm of the opinion that not every film lends itself to outdoor viewing. If the film itself is dark (i.e. most of the action takes place at night) it will be hard to see unless presented in a completely dark environment.
