The Marriotts Ridge boys soccer team traveled to Centennial on Thursday with the Howard County championship in the balance. With both teams priding themselves on organized play in the back, it was apparent that a special play would be needed to make the difference. In the 26th minute, Marriotts Ridge senior midfielder Amir Najib softly chipped a ball ahead to junior forward Jeff Kammerer, who settled and then neatly placed a shot from 15 yards in the lower left corner for the game's only score.

The regular season for public schools in soccer ends this week, and four area teams are each one win away from going into the postseason with perfect marks. On the boys side, No. 4 Marriotts Ridge (11-0) and No. 6 Severna Park (13-0) have remained flawless. For the girls, No. 2 River Hill (13-0) and No. 5 Arundel (13-0) have been equally impressive. For all four teams, completing the perfect season will be well-earned with each having challenging games to end the regular season.

A half-hour police chase of a stolen vehicle through southeastern Baltimore ended about 5 p.m. Tuesday with the driver being arrested after a foot pursuit, according to city police. Police began tailing the stolen silver vehicle about 4:30 p.m. and at one point followed it onto a local highway, said Detective Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman. But most of the chase - which involved the police helicopter Foxtrot - occurred in the city, including the streets of Canton. The vehicle, which Monroe did not identify, was seen by one passerby traveling north at a high rate of speed on S. Clinton Street near Fait Avenue, with police patrol cars in pursuit.

Chase Brexton Health Services began renovations this week on a new location in Mt. Vernon that will allow it to see four times as many medical patients. The community health center is moving next year a few blocks from its current building to the historic Monumental Life Building on Charles Street. Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot joined Chase Brexton staff Thursday to celebrate the beginning of renovations. The expansion into the 95,000-square-foot building will allow the 35-year-old organization to offer more services, including dental care to two times as many patients and behavioral health care to four times as many patients.

The kid's name was Chase, and the driver knew he'd be trouble from the second he set foot on the school bus. "He was a sixth-grader, a little rebel," said Eddie Hinton, aka "Mr. Eddie" to the children. "I decided to try and change that. " One morning, as Chase climbed aboard, Hinton declared, "I'm going to make you my friend. " Chase shrugged and moved on. "When he sat down, the kid next to him whispered, 'You know, Mr. Eddie played in the Super Bowl,' " Hinton said. Chase glanced first at the aging driver, then at the 1970 championship ring on his hand.

In years past, Nathaniel Scroggins spent late August and early September finding ways to de-emphasize the Orioles gear at the Sport Shop store in Harborplace. Whatever was left from summer got tucked into one corner, while Ravens gear swarmed the space. Last Friday, though, the store manager stood in the central aisle, flanked by orange on one side and black on the other. "It's a totally different feeling this year," Scroggins said. Nationwide, sales of Orioles merchandise increased 278 percent year-over-year for a period of four weeks spanning late August and early September, according to an analysis by SportsOneSource, a research firm focused on the sporting goods industry.
